So this question has kind of been kicking around and I am curious what the thoughts of the masses are. Most of our 1FZ-FE's are getting tired or we have added enough weight to make it very noticeable. I am assuming most of us will keep our 80's for a while. I am adding a poll to gauge the climate of market so that maybe vendors can tailor to the need if there is one even.

So please let me know if any of the above might describe you and what you want for your truck.

Or elaborate if none of them fit your idea

Diesel swap, more power and more economy. ;)

I'm bias though, if I was keeping the 1FZ it would have been turboed this spring.

I've been thinking about a 2UZ swap, a Dellow Conversions Bellhousing, H55F, and a split case. It would satisfy the HP increase, my desire to have a manual tranny, and be mostly Toyota. Haven't seen it done in an 80 and maybe that's for good reason. Anyway, I think it falls in the junkyard motor swap, so that's where my vote goes.

I guess I'm narrowing it down to one of two things, turbo or sell. The only two complaints I have are power for towing and leg room. Power can be fixed with a turbo setup. Leg room problem hasn't been solved yet to my knowledge... trying to think if there is a way to move the second row seats back some and then do something like Landtank's seat extenders for the front.

dont forget about the GM Gen 3 and 4 swaps too.

Sorry I mucked up the threads, some how double posted. Trying to combine the threads.

While turbos are all fine and good, way too much tuning involved, I think that in the end a good old 350 transplant is the way to go
Its just an opinion

A 350 would be outstanding! Alas I can't afford it, and the power out of my stock 80 is quite adequate for my needs. I would however like to know more about the timing advance I've heard of that produces a little more pep off the line AND slightly better mileage. If this is true it seems like a no brainer. But I've only ever seen one or two mentions of it here.

Advancing the timing is easy, stock is 3 degress IIRC
I believe that some have advanced it as far as 8 degrees but I think that is the high side
After that the motor will start to have pinging issues and such and it is not good for it
Do a search I believe there is a few threads on it

I cant afford a 350 either at this point:meh:

http://www.lcool.org/technical/80_series/80_series_technical.html

is worthwhile to peruse (advancing the timing is one of the links/subjects) - the old timers will know that site well from the 'early' days of 80's forums... pre-mud.

cheers,
george.

5.3 or ls swap seems like it would be most cost effective per added power. The engines complete with ecm can be had for $500 easy. Second would be turbo. I am a huge fan of turbo since I have much experience with them, but I have a 93. Personally I am leaning toward 4bt or 2uz to keep it Toyota and it's not a common swap. I also think I could swap a 2uz for much less than 14k.

Yeah in post #5, I admit I screwed up and forgot the 4bt/6bt/Isuzu and the Toyota diesel options. I don't know how to go back and change the poll. :-/

Great poll but, may I suggest a "diesel" option. Whether it be toyota, Isuzu, chevy, cummins etc, a lot of people are interested in diesels.

from a budget stand point and bang for your buck it is pretty hard to beat a chevy swap

If money were no object some type of twin turbo setup like the supra motors

Or a chevy motor with a supercharge

But my 1fz will be sticking around for awhile

If I want more power I will sell the 80 and get a street rod of some kind

When my 1fz s***s the bed 4.2 GM Atlas motor is going in.

That is another factor to consider. Weight savings. 300+lbs off the front of the truck is a big deal imo.
