I don't remember when the hed tags actually started showing up. I'll have to look at my wife's 95 when I get home tonight.

I vaguely recall 1996-ish.

After poking around I think the engines started getting the VIN tags in June 1995. The cylinder head changes part numbers at that time.

The later head has a boss for the VIN tag.

Cool. I was thinking maybe they made other changes, perhaps for emission controls? Or is Mr. T OCD enough to change the part number because of the VIN tag bosses? (Not that there's anything wrong with that...)

That change alone is significant enough to change the part number. Toyota has even changed part numbers when they change vendors. Even if the part doesn't physically change.
