I've had my 1994 80 Series for 6 months now and I love it. After a few thousand miles and some great days on the beach I am fully committed. I am going to have this 80 for life. Now it's time to put some money into her. Below is a list of what I've done already along with what I may do in the short term.

But on to the point of this thread! What would you do if this was your LC? I'd love to hear some thoughts. Clearly I am not sending her to Jonathan Ward, but would love to get a little more acceleration out of the 1FZFE. Not going to lift her, but would consider some suspension work.

Completed
- Reseal of intake valve
- Reseal valve cover gasket
- Welded hole in exhaust
- New window trim and one new motor
- Upgraded all interior lights and headlights and signals
- Consumption test - Oil consumption is ok and clean

Current Needs
- Valve Lash/Shim Adjustment (to get rid of ticking)
- Speakers and radio
- Driver seat foam replacement (She sags)

What's the intended use? As far as acceleration..... your can learn to love the slow pace, re-gear, superchage, turbo or engine swap. Its just money.

-Find any rust and put a stop to it.
-Clean out sunroof drains
-Replace speakers
-Spare tire lift mod
-Engine and transmission mounts
-New suspension bushings
-Change all fluids
-Check your rear heater lines under the truck for rust.
-Drive and enjoy. And don’t make crazy mods on it until you’re sure you want to live with them for years.

your life, or its life?

My priority is getting home. To that end, I'd replace the following:
Circuit opening relay, fuel pump relay, EFI relay, heater control valve, radiator, thermostat, PHH, all rubber hoses in the cooling system and each clamp on each hose, fusible link, battery.
You can do this stuff cheaply and easily at home. On the trail or far from home - major bummer. Your truck is now 23-34 years old, and you want to keep it forever. I'd replace each of these items.

Enjoy!

One of the other things that people recommended when I first got my rig was to check and make sure the wire harness is not damaged and if so take care of that immediately. It can become expensive if not properly taken care of.

Since your spending time on the beach, that means your going to be around salt water. If it were me, I'd plan on doing some type of rust proofing to keep that salt water from rusting your truck.

Wheres the head gasket guy? I better fill in for him while he's on leave or possibly fixing his own head gasket.

You should also do that

Yeah definitely replace the head gasket before you drive 5 miles to the store for a gallon of milk. I have my 94's maintenance stuff on a link (I think?) in my signature. My stereo amongst other things is in there.

First and foremost, it's the correct year and color! :) Flush and replace all fluids. Read all threads in the FAQ - absolute wealth of knowledge and information there!!!

As already asked, what is YOUR intended use? If a beach cruiser, as you've stated no lift in your plans and you probably aren't interested in armor (front/rear bumpers, sliders, t-case skid plate, etc.). Air compressor or CO2 tank to air up after a day on the beach?

The cheapest acceleration upgrade would be a set of the smallest tires you can put on it. However, this approach is unheard of and does come with its own set of drawbacks like getting high centered on those parking stall stops at the mall. But, if you fancy yourself a 4Runner (no puns intended) you might try super small tires and then report on the pro’s and con’s.

BTW, welcome to Mud :flipoff2:

Yeh i often do my head gasket between filling up the gas tanks and being told by the mudgasketguy that everytime my tires need balancing or my dash lights stop working its because i have a blown HG

Valve lash/shin adjustment is kinda hard to do without pulling the head off.

These threads never get old - and I dont meant that sarcastically, I enjoy reading everyones opinions on basic s*** like this.

I'm more of a part of the "just fxxxing use it" crowd. Baseline everything that makes sense (new fluids all around, cap/rotor/plugs, phh, fan clutch mod, maybe a few other things im forgetting) and then if something pops up address it then. Cross each bridge as you come to it, these trucks have a strong reputation for durability and dead reliability. Know your truck, know the common faults and go from there - no need to over complicate it.

As for mods, everyone is going to be different. Like others have said, its going to matter what you plan to do with the truck. If you get more specific about your intended uses we may be able to be of more help.

All that said, good luck with it and enjoy getting outside with it. Thats the point of all this anyway. Dont lose sight of that.
