thanks to Texican (dammit) I'm not looking at a 1991 80 series at a great price within 2 hours of here....really, I'm not...

guy claims diff locks, I doubt it....215k, 31's, normal stuff. Typical torn Toyota DS seat (my 95 mini was torn in the same spot) AC not working, cruise not working, owner uses Mobil1 and initial impression leads me to believe great maintenance (he says so, must be true....)

is this rig REALLY gonna be a gutless and irritating as I imagine, or will this only motivate me to drop in a diesel or vortec??

I don't need the rig, but.....

you can do better, unless the $ is really low

I am sure you are aware that FJ80's (91&92) did not come with lockers from the factory right?

>> guy claims diff locks, I doubt it.. <<

Unlikely as they were only offered on 93-97's. It will have a locking center differential with a dash switch as the center diff was standard on all US 80 series and the 91-92 came with the dash switch. 93-97 with the CDL switch were installed by the owner.

The FJ80 series (91-92) came with rear drum brakes, the gutless but extremely reliable 3FE engine, no ABS, and a semi-floater rear axle. They also came with 15" wheels. IMHO, the 91-92 are the only viable candidates for a SBC conversion. The later FZJ80 series tend to be better candidates for a rebuild of the 1FZ-FE DOHC engine.

What he's calling "difflocks" is going to be the dash swith to lock the center diff in the transfer case.

The cruise problem is likely the sensor inline with the speedo cable. That thing is about 92 bucks.

The A/C is anybody's guess, it could get steep in a hurry.

3FE's are slow fer sure.

No full-floater in the rear and drum brakes.

The price would have to be VERY RIGHT.

I would hold out for a 1FZ powered vehicle with locks. You see, I KNOW you....:D

C'mon Woody, we know you are :princess:, but don't buy a :princess: rig dude. Think 1FZ-FE, think FF rear axle, think factory lockers (cause you know you'll eventually wheel it or take them out for something else :D ) etc.

Tell you what, cut my moderator salary by 1/2 so you can increase the price range you're looking at

under $3k?

makes it a viable candidate for the SBC at that price...

Agreed.

I loved my 91, but it is weaker (powerwise) than my 94
if that helps. I have a 91 manual and electric manual I would send you if you do buy it.

Thats the part I had to replace and it was real easy to diagnose, all done from the front seat, My loyal to the local price was more like 168.00.

Woody,

My 91 spent some time in Wisconsin. If I were you, I would be looking out of state. Is always nice to be able to turn bolts without breaking them. 3k does sound appealing for about $1000 you could get a whole rear axle with the rear disc brakes and rear elocker. Definitely a V8 canidate at that price. I don't normally recommend them do to the cost of upgrading to similar performance of a FZJ80 with lockers. But at 3k you could probably put in a motor and do at least the rear axle and still be a little under the price of a FZJ.

I just drove a total of 14 hrs in a BJ42, had lots of time too think.

The 91/92 are exellent candidates for diesel swaps seeing as the trannies are mechanical, all you need is a extreme valve body from Slee to change the shift points for the diesel.

Of course I am speaking of the toyota diesel, I think you could score a 1HZ pretty cheap and it would be a bolt in application.

Turbo, intercooler and my customer plans on 300HP and almost 450foot pounds torque.

If your a HP dude I guess the vortec is another option.

my thots exactlee for the motor option....damn...more ideas...lol

If you're looking at the 3fe, may as well just buy a Ryobi weedwacker and do an engine swap with that. :flipoff2:

I used to have a 91, it was abeautiful rig, but on the highway they are a little anemic, however if you are off roading it alot or should i say crawling, the 3FE is awesome, i had it off road with my dads 350 powered fj55 and on steep hills it would just pull where the chevy engine needed to rev quite a bit higher, he actually had to juice it on some spots, where i would just crawl it.
So off road i loved the 3FE.
