I hope someone can help. I am the original owner and have the original shop manual. I just set the valves and was trying to set the timing. I followed the manual and what I saw on youtube. The distributor is fully retarded and the timing make dances between the 5 and 8 setting. I am concerned that the distributor is fully retarded and still can't get the timing to the 5 degree mark. Does anyone have any suggestions ?
Thanks,
Mark

There is a diagnostic port beside the fuse box under the hood, you have to use a wire and jump 2 terminals. It removes any advance from the engine and should retard your engine to get proper base timing. When your remove the jumper your timing will advance a few degrees. RPM should be close to 800.

Thanks but I did that. That's the problem is that any advance of the distributor or removing the jumper advances the timing further toward 8 degrees from 5 degrees. The manual says the correct timing on the 22re engine is right at 5 degrees

I would start from the beginning. Put your motor at TDC and remove the distributor. When you go to stab it in point the rotor at 12 o'clock and when you put it in you should see it go to 11 o'clock. Adjust from there.

Should look like this at TDC (AFTER inserting):
