I'm in the process of cleaning up the 2F I bought that came from an '84 FJ-60 and is going in my 40. It has the oil cooler on it. It looks like a fantastic source for oil seepage and needs new copper washers and O-Rings at least.

A couple wondering's I have about this thing.

What were all the other bolts for on the bracket itself? There are three that I count.

I know cooling oil is a good thing, but is this this type of arrangement effective?

You can see the cooler body was repaired. My guess is this was necessary at one point due to over tightening of the huge bolts attaching it to the bracket. Likely to stop a leak rather than change o-rings / copper washers.

Do these things ever NOT leak (for very long?) I'm weighing whether it is more of a liability than a help.

Mike, all Middle East spec 40's have those oil coolers and I've only seen 1 leaking from the engine coolant side due to corrosion.
I reckon the plugs are there simply to clean out the fluid passeges with the exception of 1 - it houses a pressure relief valve with spring. It may be in there and gummed up, but will come out with persistance.

Agreed. And that weld you see is original, don't believe it is a repair. I run one on mine.

My 76 has had one since 76.

My 84 has had one since 84

My 89 has had one since 89

None of them leak or cause problems. I say run it.

Sounds like a good report. I'll order up the new copper washers and o-rings and run it. Being in the desert, any kind of cooling is a good thing.

I'm curious about the spring inside. Maybe I'll take those plugs out and make sure the passages are nice and clean.
 
New coppers and o-rings will fix it right up. The cooler works very well, and coupled iwth 8 quarts of oil in an F engine, you get excellent oil life and engine protection from it.

The other bolts are just plugs and such for passageways when they were machined and as desertpat said, one is a relief valve for the oiling system on the 2F, worth cleaning all passageways, also pull the sender and clean that as well, while it is all apart.

Only flaw I had on mine was the heater hose that leaves the front of the cooler and goes to the lower radiator hose. The orginal hose was expanded about twice its size and very soft. Appeared to be degradation from oil dripping on it from oil changes and such. Just watch that hose, and you should be fine. Of course it took about 20 years for the hose to come close to failure due to oil exposure, so you should be fine :)

I recall picking through NAPA assortments until I found the right copper washers and o-rings to fit mine years ago. I think the plug bolts will also have copper washers to seal them. Sometimes a copper washer can be reused. At least on the plug bolts, if they don't leak, you are fine, but I would replace the big ones, as they are tougher to deal with after the engine gets dirty behind the cooler.
 
I took the bolts/spring/plunger out of mine and soaked it in Berryman's, then on to the parts washer. I also used a small bottle brush and I did get a bunch of goop out of mine. Same with the cooler/exchanger part, but I used CLR in the water jacket.
On some years, one of the two bolts was drilled and tapped for 1/8bsp so I did that to mine so I could run both the stock sender and a mechanical gauge.

Great mod as you can tap them out for 1/8 fittings and use them as ports for gauges and even a tap for a turbo.

I’m going to assume it’s just stuck inside and I just need to retrieve it. Can anyone share a picture of what it looks like?

Assuming you got this all put back together? I'm doing the same right now...I went to the Toyota dealership with the old crushed washers and they matched them for me...the small and the big ones were just over $3 each!! Yikes.

QUESTION: Crushed washers have a lipped side and smooth (slightly rounded side) as shown in the photo here. I'm assuming the lipped side always goes against the bolt. Is that right?

Yes, I got mine reassembled and it works great. My plunger was stuck in 39 years of goo. I assembled my washers the same as you have and zero leaks. That said I just used intuition so maybe someone else from the brain trust can validate this.

Good luck with the rest of your refurbishment!
