Hello,

Just wanting to get some ideas on listing prices for this 1980 FJ. I will have it in my possession soon once it arrives from overseas. I have been told as high as $100K, but wanted to get some feedback from the community. Mileage shows less than 1,700 Kilometers. The seats are literally brand new and wrapped in protective paper. Also, where should I list it? Your feedback is much appreciated.

Generally speaking you're required to register the vehicle where it is domiciled. The state is generally after lost taxes when they do go after people, at least in CA. Definitely not legal. Like getting paid in cash under the table and not reporting the income, people do get away with it.

Anybody can title a vehicle in Montana I don’t believe it’s illegal, but I’m not an expert on the law. There’s a lot of FJ40’s in California titled in Montana.

here is what I understand about out of state vehicle registrations
the person registers an LLC with the secretary of state
the person then hires someone to do the paperwork and titles/registers a vehicle under the company name, which has a presence in MT
technically the company "owns" the vehicle which is based in MT
not sure how the address stuff works, if it all goes to a PO box then gets forwarded??
our fees and costs are quite a bit more reasonable than other states, we don't have a sales tax
any car/rig over 10 years old can get permanent license plates
we don't have any emissions or yearly inspections in MT

a non-compliant rig is legal in MT and thus can be driven in all the US
higher dollar rigs, $200,000+RV's can be done this way and save the owner lots in local taxes wherever they live

there apparently is quite abit of interest in this, as the last time I was in out DMV there was a lady standing in line who knew everyone behind the counter, she is only able to process 3 vehicles at a time, she would do those then get back in line and do 3 more. I talked to her a bit and she stated she is in there 1 or 2 times a week, for most of the day doing paperwork.

this is 1 county out of 56 in the state, some of the smaller counties have complained they are getting overwhelmed with all the extra rigs being registered.
it's good for our state as we are getting extra revenue, bad for the owner's current state as they lose out on the revenue.

I’ve registered many vehicles in MT and “garaged” them in other states.

Is it illegal? Possibly. Do they hunt people down? No. Not at all

It’s like rolling through a stop sign or going 60 in a 55. They got other s*** to worry about

“FJ”…I think you have the wrong decade, body style, etc.

Very similary FJ40 on Facebook for $25k. Not apples to apples but close.

this isn't exactly true. This became a big problem in Colorado and a couple of years ago hundreds of people were prosecuted for this scheme. You may get away with it, but you will be rolling the dice on this.

interesting that article was from 2008,
wondering if the prosecuted had rigs registered under personally or under a business?

I think the LLC scheme is the only way it really works. As a member of the criminal defense bar, every known and then a local Colorado DA makes this a platform and goes pretty hard on these setups. With license plate readers becoming more utilized, I'd highly recommend people stay away from this idea. I'm all for people saving where they can and the government not getting anymore tax dollars than they deserve, but this scheme is playing with fire.
