Anybody can title a vehicle in Montana I don’t believe it’s illegal, but I’m not an expert on the law. There’s a lot of FJ40’s in California titled in Montana.
here is what I understand about out of state vehicle registrations
the person registers an LLC with the secretary of state
the person then hires someone to do the paperwork and titles/registers a vehicle under the company name, which has a presence in MT
technically the company "owns" the vehicle which is based in MT
not sure how the address stuff works, if it all goes to a PO box then gets forwarded??
our fees and costs are quite a bit more reasonable than other states, we don't have a sales tax
any car/rig over 10 years old can get permanent license plates
we don't have any emissions or yearly inspections in MT
a non-compliant rig is legal in MT and thus can be driven in all the US
higher dollar rigs, $200,000+RV's can be done this way and save the owner lots in local taxes wherever they live
there apparently is quite abit of interest in this, as the last time I was in out DMV there was a lady standing in line who knew everyone behind the counter, she is only able to process 3 vehicles at a time, she would do those then get back in line and do 3 more. I talked to her a bit and she stated she is in there 1 or 2 times a week, for most of the day doing paperwork.
this is 1 county out of 56 in the state, some of the smaller counties have complained they are getting overwhelmed with all the extra rigs being registered.
it's good for our state as we are getting extra revenue, bad for the owner's current state as they lose out on the revenue.
