No pics but I did wash all the gears/ shafts and take them to a friend with the right knowledge to get his considered opinion on the general condition of all the components. The verdict is all good though I still have to measure for wear on the shaft and bores.

Been taking pictures all week and not posting... so here are the pics

bearings in - now for that Toybox install without instructions....

I took 0.100" off the fifth gear fork bar (thanks Rufus!) because it hits the adapter plate preventing fifth from fully engaging.

And I did not receive the spacer clamp thing that is required for a 5spd toybox install. Again, I had to glean that from another Mudder's frustrated posts.

For those contemplating the toybox and all it's lack of info - it's really not that bad. Use the search function and for god's sake - dry fit, dry fit, dry fit everything. I still have to cut the output shaft but I will do that at the last possible opportunity after I have the first adapter plate fully mounted.

for you eagle eyed lurkers - the fifth extension housing is not yet permanently mounted in this shot. I still have to install the fork arm thingy.

So that's where I stopped as I cannot go any further without the clamp that supports fifth gear. I suppose I could mount and assemble the transfer to the toybox but that would be a bit cumbersome to assemble and test fit later. Also, I am going to order some new bolts and bits so I'll wait for the parts to continue.

looking good, i appreciate all the time and the attention to detail you show in your work. very encouraging to us back yard builders.

congrats, see you mid summer.

Dan is going to be apoplectic.

You have raised the bar SO high that Dan will now have to quit his job in order to devote enough time to achieve this new level of perfection... you have simply re-defined the term.

I am humbled.

Gotta admit all that shiny bling makes me stand and stare with a goofy grin.

Keeping busy today doing an OEM parts quoting exercise. I've got a list of 15 or so part numbers that I have sent to several vendors. Got a spread sheet set up with the various costs all extended out to compare where the best deal and the best service come from for my particular situation. Some vendors won't ship to Canada, some will. Local dealers are up to quintuple the price for the same thing I can get from a US dealer. One example is 91651-60830, just a bolt. It's 13 cents at Rusty Wallace Toyota and $2.35 from a friend with a discount from a local dealer. That's 18 times more expensive here than online! Bigger items are similar - h55f shifter boot for the top cover is $47 at the dealer but $21 online.

Ideally I'd like a vendor that can get all the parts but even RWToyota has some trouble with Canadian spec parts - even though my local dealer has to get that same part from a warehouse in California :bang:

Try living in Australia, Kevin. the rule for most things here is to double the American price and then add 25%. Bear in mind that teh Australian dollar is worth MORE than the US dollar...

I bought Bosch split fire platinum spark plugs (the kind with four electrodes) in the US when I was home for $4 each. The same plugs here are au$39 each.

The rubber for my windshield was $85 from Beaver Toyota in Santa Fe, and au$375 here with my TLCA discount.

It was cheaper for me to buy my 33x10.50x15 BFG A/Ts in the US and mail them to myself in Australia than to buy the same ones here at a local shop. At least you don't have to ship your parts 14,000 miles to get a discount...

These are the joys of living in a socialist country where increasing taxes is a favourite pastime for our MPs.

Cheers,

Josh

Guys,

It really doesn't seem to matter where you live.

That huge Toyota warehouse is just 30 minutes from me.
Not only are outsiders not allowed in there, but the big Toyota dealer on the opposite side of the freeway says they cannot directly get parts from there--they have to go thru the "network."

I have heard that they periodically go thru the warehouse and toss out the very slowest moving parts, crunching them up so no one else can use them. And that same Toyota dealership wanted to charge me nearly double for the same part I could buy from a Canadian dealer thousands of miles away, who gets the part from that very same warehouse.

So....... my plans for a local obsolete parts dealer, as well as week-ends spent dumpster-diving, were both thwarted.

They say there is a plan to these things.....hmmm.

Ask Wayne about that "plan"......

It's pretty simple - they just want you to crush your 6 year old car and buy one of the shiny new ones.

Josh - yeah, our dollor is worth more too. Makes trips to the US easier for both parts and tourism.

it is called "fleet renewal" and has been in the works by Toyota, Chev, Ford and Dodge since at least 2006 when i first stumbled across it.
this is not the thread to discuss this but it is fact and not fiction so IF you like your old beaters, whether they be classic cars, retro trucks or exotic 4X then you ALL best be keeping your eyes and ears open.

that is all.

cheers

You get Some here and you lose some there, in the end there is not much difference. In the mean time use the fact that we have internet to get the benefit of different locations different prices. I wish we where able to get petrol from you guy's with € 1,78 à liter it realy starts to hurt. That is 9,64 USD per gallon.:crybaby:

Kevin your work sets new standards.

So what are you using for masking, this looks like it would be a lot faster than newspaper and tape :meh:

BTW, cool build

That green stuff is high temp plastic masking tape for powder coating. It can take the heat of the oven without shrinking or melting. I borrowed a 3/4" and 2" roll from my PC guy. He also gave me some 8.5x11" sheets of the stuff for some of the bigger openings.

You guys over across the pond have been getting gouged for petrol for well over a decade now. I don't know how a young family over there can afford to operate a car at all.

There is road tax to, it goes by weight over here, unless a vehicle is over 25 years old you pay about 1600 to 2400 Euro per year on tax for a decent 4x4.

But still cheaper then buying à house here.
