Had a starter blowup into 4 pieces. see attached pic. I have never seen or heard of a starter blowing up before. I could not source an OEM starter prior to my son heading back to college.

I ended up going to O'Reilly's to get a starter and installed it on thanksgiving. Yesterday my son started the FJ40 up and the solenoid stuck open. I ended up yanking the negative off the battery to kill it.

I would just as soon go back to an OEM or OEM quality starter.

I was on another mud thread and guys were talking about a gear reduction starter that they were taking from an FJ60. what is the best place to source one? I have looked on FB marketplace and Craigslist.

Why buy a used one? New are available from your Toyota dealer, then you won't need to worry about some Chinese junk blowing up again ;)

upgrade to the later gear reduction starter would be my suggestion

Got a new situation. Installed the oreillys starter until I can source an OEM one.

When we installed the starter and got it wired up. I tried to start it and heard a click, with no start. Tried again and click. Tapped on the starter and it started.

I also saw a spark from the side of the starter to the block. The spark doesn't happen every time, but I saw it 3-4 times over the dozen or so times I started it. The starter is grounded well.

THOUGHTS?

Cruiseryteq has outstanding service, I’ve had several interaction on phone and email. Always fast. City Racer, no interaction - but - service and delivery speed is fast. Spector is awesome - generally a little pricey. Redline has been great. Cruiser parts is awesome. Marksoffroad - is awesome for used parts and rebuilt items. Cool cruisers is great, memory serves me - they bill thru Amazon. Vintageteqparts - amazing quality, delivery is sometimes incredibly fast - sometimes not.

:)

In general. This board is an and it’s vendors are awesome. Those mentioned are the folks I’ve worked with.

Did you replace the solenoid or use the old one?

If the starter is well grounded - I’m surprised that it could spark.

If you have battery jumper. Use the jumper and put 12 volts on the positive side of the solenoid ) by passing the steering wheel / key circuit.

IIRC I used the part # from like an ‘86 FJ60 when buying a new gear reduction starter for my 77. Had it in a day and it was plug and play.

your starters' gear got caught up on the flywheel, i would iron out that possibility then go with a gear reduction as Paul mentioned

12V 1KW pretty much any 2F and 3F configuration, '80-'81 through the 90's

What would cause the starter gear to get caught on the fly wheel? Timing or?

could have been something as silly as the starter loosened up from the bellhousing, but more often than not its a worn pinion gear and or spent pinion gear bearing.

your solenoid could have issues as well. like contacts seizing and the solenoid staying stuck out.

you could/should dissect the broken starter to see if there is evidence of anything abnormal(other than the broken shaft and destroyed teeth

I would also use a flashlight to check the flywheel. sorry if I've stacked tasks, just thinking of possibilities that might help you out.

The whole thing
That spark your talking about is just plan weird of you have a solid ground.

Unless — is the positive cable from the battery to the starter possibly fried / melted? If you “feel” that cable top to bottom - are there any soft spots or anything less that smooth thickness?

crap starter, bad rebuild,
you should not need to tap on the starter at all to get it to turn over
something inside is not correct
thus the spark, + voltage finding ground or the other way around
you state the starter is grounded, does it have a cable from mounting bolt to frame? frame end clean? battery cable from battery to engine and to frame? all ends clean?

Recently bought a replacement gear reduction starter from cruiser corps for around $150. These things last forever, replacing another gear reduction starter that I bought in '98 that was slowing down. Definitely getting the old one rebuilt as a spare.

Mine failed, as well. A chunk of the starter got stuck between the flywheel and bellhousing, seizing the motor, during the time before I owned it. Then, I bought the truck not knowing where to look. It was hard removing the bellhousing because the crank was seized, and I couldn't remove the clutch pressure plate with the crank in one position.
