Awesome work! I’m envious. Looking forward to seeing more pictures.

One question, are the leaf springs new? Refurbished? Vendor?

Okay....quite impressive! Subscribed no doubt! Can't wait to watch and learn!

The bearings for the steering box arrived today. I will be out of town for a while, but am looking forward to finishing the steering box rebuild. Next is the transfer case, then on to the transmission. It has been cold out, so the calipers still need another coat of paint. Here is a picture of the painted and ready steering box.

Awesome rebuild! I got my 77 sky blue fj40 taken apart then got tied up on other stuff. You have inspired me to get started putting it back together.

Did you consider getting the frame and heavy metal parts hot dip galvanized or was the POR-15 your first and only consideration?

Never considered anything but the POR-15. I work with a guy who Rebuilt a 4 wheeler. Type in "Renegade Rebuild" into google. He convinced me that the paint system was the one to use. You can hit it with a hammer and it won't mark the paint. I may find a better product or "technique" in the future, afterall this is only the beginning. My father has a '72 that will probably end up being a "part two" to this thread.:bang:

Great work! Does the chassis coat give a bit of a hammered textured effect? I'm at the same stage as you and painted my frame with Por-15 bit I am now contemplating whether or nor I should go over it with the Por-15 chassis coat.

I like the POR Chasis Coat. It seems that the rust preventative paint is sensitive to UV rays and will fade over the years.

I've been away for a while, but I did get to do a little work today. The steering box is complete, and the calipers got another coat of paint.

Hey man you need to speed it up at this rate it will take you years to complete the chassis is the easy part the drive train will be tougher . Grandma slow but she's old and so will we be if you don't get goin.

The weather finally let up enough to finish coating the calipers. It's good to have a rolling chasis again, and the blue paint did dress up the front end. Thanks for the good advice.

Got a little more done today. Finished disassembling the transfer case. Starting cleaning the case, but 33 years of grime will take more than a few hours to get rid of.

Looks like you blasted the transfercase.

Will you paint it or ???

Thinking about clear coat after using an aluminum acid. It was blasted with a very fine aluminum oxide.

I ended up painting the transfer case. It's going back together now. I got concerned that the clear coat wouldn't hold up to all the rocks and debris, and I didn't want to leave it as bare aluminum. At least the paint will make it easier to keep clean.
