Got my FIRST FJ55 a few weeks ago, my Spring project. I'm pumped.

It had been sitting for a year and a half, mostly stock 1F engine. (Some slight mods here and there)

Anyway, I got it running after a couple days of tweaking. After a road test I thought the timing might be off but figured I'd put a test on the Vac Advance and sure enough the Vacuum Advance isn't holding any vacuum which explains a lot with how it was running.

After some research it looks like my options are:
-Patch/Rebuilt it up and hope I can squeeze some miles out of it.
-Find a parts vehicle and get the VacAdv hoping it won't have the same problems.
-Buy a new mechanical dizzy
-Buy a new electronic dizzy

For the price break down I've seen I'm debating just going with a new electronic dizzy. Does that make the most sense, am I completely missing something?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

-Matt

Here is an image of this beauty, rust in all the spots it should while being outside in the PNW.

A stock '73 engine would have a vacuum RETARD dizzy. If that is what you have, just cap off the vaccum source to the dizzy and run it on the mechanical advance until you decide on what to do with it. Post a pic of the dizzy, we can tell you if it's an advance or retard dizzy.

Need carb ID as well

I've been down this road before. The vacuum supply timing from ports on the carb are also an issue. Carbs supply vacuum at only some angles of throttle plate and the distributor has to be designed to match that supply pattern. I believe a stock '73 carb supplies vacuum in a way that works with vacuum retard distributors. I think vacuum retard was left on the scrap heap of history as a no-so-great idea and that vacuum advance won that fight (why, I never figured out). If, say, a Webber aftermarket carb has been installed (that was my situation) those have vacuum supply designed to work with vacuum advance distributor. I ended out getting a new toyota vacuum advance distributor that worked with the Webber carb. Works well for me.

That's the vacuum retard dizzy. That's also a Late-F engine (1.5 F as some say) usually found on a '74...do you have a 4-speed transmission?

Here it is. Thanks!

Pighead - It's a 3 speed tranny.

It's titled as a 74' but it's a 73' on the vin, not sure if that changes anything?

Well, the oil filter on the passenger side of the engine says it's a late F engine, unless it's a 2F. Funny things were coming out of the factory in the mid '70s. Or maybe you've had an engine swap.

I'll try to get that ID tag tonight, where is that exactly located?
Thanks!

How do I check to see for sure what type of engine it is?

A picture of the carb and top of engine may well give it away. The serial number on the engine will start "F" or "2F"

Sorry about the delay guys, so it was built "SEP 73".

I talked to a buddy who just told me that the Carb is some Chinese remanufactured style that is only a few years old, (The brand starts with an "A" but I can't make out the rest of the text...) Which this explains the lack of fuel and hi-cups, popping in lower RPMs...I think. ;)

The dizzy I'm not sure about yet he said it was a dizzy with a retard? Not sure if that means I need to rebuild the VAC ADV or get an entirely new dizzy? Still lost there.

Also I was advised to get a carb of an FJ60 that should fit this because the Chinese one that is in it is difficult to rebuild and it's pretty much a POS?

So at this point I'm a tad bit lost, I have answer but no real solutions.
-My next steps are track down a local carb. (which I have no clue what to be looking for.)
-From there determine if the timing is off or if that VAC ADV retard is still acting up.
-Maybe change the points to electronic ignition system?

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Lost in translation,
Matt

Aisan carb?????

You can see where the engine number is stamped in this pic...above the starter and behind the dipstick. Clean that off and read the number, it wiil tell you what engine and when it was made. Read the name on the carb, is it Aisan? Show us a pic of that carb too. You have a vacuum retard dizzy. Dizzys are either vac retard OR vac advance, not both. If you want a vac advance dizzy, you need another one.
I would not buy an FJ60 carb for your rig. Look at Trollhole's carbs (and dizzys too).
If you're gonna want to post more pics, or get more answers, you really should buy a star from our Benevolent Dictator (who runs this site).

Yes it's that type of carb, I know nothing about them but I'll do some research and see what I come up with.

You need a new buddy. Aisan is stock LandCruiser, (Japanese, not Chinese)

Thanks Pighead!

Number I found was F 512524

Here is a photograph of the carb, after squinting my eyes enough I could see it is :Aisan", the rod that connects to the linkage is loose and the rubber around it is shot:

Here is a full engine shot:

Trollhole's parts look excellent and his prices are very fair.

How do I purchase this "star"? I'd love to support this community, it's been great!
