The 1F exhaust manifold was cracked so we opted to replace with a set of SOR headers, and I build the rest of the exhaust in the original style but with 100% 304 stainless, and TIG welded everything.

In this pic you can see Redline's throttle cable system, the 1F-version alternator slider with built-in tensioner that @ToyotaMatt sells, and my custom air cleaner adapter. I believe there are off-the shelf options for the air cleaner now.
We also converted the oil lines to AN.

Tech tip, if using these headers with the 1969 Big intake manifold, you need to grind/clearance a few of the runners which interfere and prevent the intake from fully seating, thus creating a huge vacuum leak.

Man, that exhaust!! 😍

FJ60 brake master? How is the pedal feel with otherwise stock FJ60 brake system and no booster?

This is a rad build. I bet the Owner is stoked!

Hilux master, same bore as 60/62. Normally I would use a 60/62 master, really not sure why we ended up with the Hilux one. It's been over 1.5 year since I bolted that up.
It stops well, just requires lots more leg pressure. What's odd about 40's is they use the same pedal ratio with non-power and power brakes. Adding a booster would be really ideal - we didn't want to get into cutting the firewall rib and the Sniper and master interfered with the JTO booster spacer thing though

Interesting. I always just assumed the pedal ratio was less for the boosted trucks, which is why lots of folks are satisfied with non-boosted masters on the earlier trucks. I lost the booster on my ‘71 with wilwood front disc conversion, factory master and rear drums, and it was downright dangerous. It took incredible pedal effort to stop. Lots of variables though….

Again great build, thanks for sharing!

I wouldn’t say this setup is dangerous, the upgraded components make it pretty decent. But, I don’t know how quick I’d be able to stop in a panic braking situation if I wasn’t paying attention and was surprised. You do get spoiled with power brakes. Granted on the 105, the booster motor went tits up and I was driving the Hundy around for a bit unboosted, so I’m used to it😉

No skipping leg day that’s for sure😂

Anyone who is 100% satisfied with the manual brakes either has no idea what they are missing, unless someone just wants a 100% original truck for the sake originally which is fine if that is your goal, I could definitely see cutting the firewall skin and grafting in the later pattern, pedal bucket and moving the rib on this truck, we just didn't want to add that element of project with everything else during this session as the work had kind of already snowballed and that really is it's own free-standing project. Owner's decision, he really asks me way more often about when we can weld the gate on his military trailer though

Great build write up. Amazing work Matt and Team!!! All the cool upgrades I need! 😁
