Got back around to working on the FJ40 again. Wanted to show you a sweet Tool Kit I picked up along with my Grandfather's original Bottle Jack (that I touched up). Grandfather had lost the tool kit somewhere along the way, so was excited to get this. Check out the grease gun still in the original sealed bag. :)

How many different colors was the 40 painted?
Probably 3 (original pale yellow, then a green, then the final paint. Pops just did a latex :(. Probably preserved it though. :)

Did some more categorizing and photos today of the build:

The powder coat thing became addictive :)
Specter Off-road does a nice exhaust OEM (I assume) with all bolts, brackets.... (did the fan back to orange)
Went with the Advanced Adapters Transmission & Transfer Case, seals/gaskets/bearing and o-rings/parts.

Tires and re-chroming of the OEM hub caps came out really nice. Went with a nice Toyo M/T (31x10.5x15).
Then Grandpa/Dad had the original "F" engine & Chassis/Body manual. Specter has the nice re-prints of the manuals (that didn't make the generation transition, it was lost somewhere) & I picked up a cool 1966 FJ40 brochure on-line and an inspection light last week.

Pops/Grandpa had all (5) original OEM rims with all hub cap clips in tact. Went with a satin black powder coat and was able to keep OEM for the rims.

Ah! what a good feeling it is to have nice parts ready to install.

I installed a 6 blade plastic fan on my F because it seemed to me the vetran consensus was/is 4 blade metal fans are not so bueno.

You may want to stay period correct but I figured I'd repost a couple comments on the subject of 4 blade metal fans.

Free for the cost of shipping here too. I've NEVER sold one, and wouldn't want it on my conscience that I ever did. Most dangerous thing to ever be bolted onto a landcruiser [close runner up: delco dizzy]

Plastic fans rule!

Why do you think it would be a good 'addition'? If it is an UPGRADE from the 4 blade metal fan, well then....ANYTHING is a good upgrade from that timebomb.

Best

Mark A.

I'm glad you told me about the fan. I'm still new to the Cruiser life, but this is the first I've heard of the Original "F" 4 blade fan failures. So, they're common? Reason, I ask is I thought my Dad replaced it due to better air flow, but now I'm wondering if it was due to this. My cruiser currently has the 6 blade plastic, so maybe I'll stay with that? I was doing exactly what the "bigredrocker" was stating, I was going to back to period correct. Interesting !

I'm trying to restore my '65 as accurately as I can. Did the research and decided the old fan was too big of a liability. When I went to clean mine up for a repaint, I found a little crack already forming. Probably just a matter of time before it grenades.

@Jason Reed
Do you recall if your dad used a spacer behind the fan? After re-reading Mark's Offroad comments, I realized I didn't add a spacer. So far, I have not noticed the blades nicking my alternator pulley. I've only embarked on a couple short neighborhood test drives though.

Awesome job Jason. We are on the same page. I need to start my own build thread also. 1978 Aussie, FJ-45. For now I'll post some photos I just got from my buddy who's doing the body stuff. Had all the parts Dustless blasted and now ready for primer.

Back at it this week. Had the body removed off the frame and the rest of the parts removed and getting the frame, engine, trans, transfer case and running gear ready to send to "Rock40" on here to do the restoration on those. Getting excited.

Wiring Harness question: I need a new harness and was told that someone on here does them to spec and "like new" condition, hopefully with the year correct plugs and all. Any help on where to get a new harness built is much appreciated.
