Got about 3 hours on the lv tonight, pretty much accomplished tonight what I should have got done yesterday. ;p Now keep in mind in all these pics, that the unit got bolted in tonight and brackets made. The cuts I made still have to be cleaned up and made to look nice, so this is all the rough draft.
Back at the AC unit. Cut out that area of the glove box so that the unit could sit up a little higher. Drilled 2 holes through the firewall in the center, pics of the bolts on the back side. Then I made a bracket out of 1/8" x 1 1/4" angle iron, kinda a U shaped piece. I was able to use one of the 8mm stock T nuts on the lower hole on the firewall. The upper bolt on the firewall on that bracket is 6 mm tapped so it threads in on the engine compartment side. The holes were then drilled for the threaded boss's on the AC unit which are 1/4-20, got those bolted in. So what you see in the pics is the AC unit haning all by itself........Now, I know some of your are saying, "Why don't you mount it higher" I would, but can't, 3 main reasons why:
1. Wiper motor assembly, I took my 12v battery pack tonight and hooked up the ground and positive leads to it so I could watch it rotate. I found the lowest spot and stopped it there. Right now I've got about a 3/4" clearence from the wiper assembly to the AC unit, any higher it will hit. It also had to be mounted that far right to clear the wiper motor.
2. One of the pics you can see the right defroster tube through the ash tray. I cut off about a 1 1/4" off the tube. The right rear defrost duct is directly below it right now. If I can find a rubber boot or make one it will line right up.
3. In front I plan on raising the line right below the ashtray to line up with the dash line to the left of it. You should be able to see the black line what I intend to do. The way it's looking now, the 2 center ducts will be centered from that dash line to the bottom of the dash. Any higher and it will start to run into that line and you will have an uneven surface. The way I see it is that the duct piece on the back side has to be trimmed a little and the 2 center AC ducts on the evaporator itself will have to be trimmed back a bit. Then when you install the unit, you will have to tip it up onto those 2 center ducts because it will be that tight.
So, it is where it is and I believe this is probably as good as it's going to get??
Also had my neigbor cut a piece of 1/8" flat stock 6" x 10" at Polaris today, he brought that over tonight. I marked and drilled the 4 holes to mount it where the fan was. This will be my bulkhead where I drill 4 holes, install the rubber grommets that came with the kit and run my AC and heater hoses through it.
Question: I planned on running the AC hoses through 1 rectangle and Heater through the other. Any reason to run one on top vs the other???
Also made a 2" piece for the new Ididit steering column, since it has a 2" dia.
