You know what Norm Abrams (New Yankee Workshop, This Old House) says..."you can never have enough clamps"........:D

Lookin' nice Matt!

Not a ton of stuff to report, but got in a little time on the LV tonight.

I had removed those 3 roof x-members a couple weeks ago when I took the roof off. Before I removed them I #'d them and also marked an arrow so I knew there location and which way was forward. I had to do a little blasting so the #'s would be wiped off by the blaster. I welded the #'s on each one along with the arrow so when I blasted and painted I still knew one which one was which. Anyway, pics of those x-members, blasted and painted.

While those were drying I figured I would drag the roof outside and start on that. That thing is kinda rusty so I didn't want to make a mess when I started grinding on that. Few pics of the roof and what I started. Long way to go on the roof, lots of metal that needs to be welded in yet.

Hopefully more to come on Wed.

Matt, I haven't be to the forum much lately, I see you are still doing a outstanding job on the LV.

Those welded #s on the supports got me thinking it would be neat if you found a place to put a time capsul of some sort in the truck with a date and your names, maybe a card with pics of your resto.
Maybe in 50 years the next guy who works on it will find it. With the work and new rust inhibitors you are puttin on it it may be longer than 50 years

That actually sounds like a cool idea. I could weld my name and date up in one of those X-members easily. You would never see it again unless you took the roof off again though, not sure if anyone would be stupid enough like me to do that again though. ;)

I guess it might make it another 50 years? It made it 40 years with little to no rust protection. I don't know the history on this rig, I got it out of San Diego. The Minnesota road salt might be a little tougher on it though than the San Diego area

Those x-members should last a while now. There was no primer or paint on them from Toyota. Now they have 2 coats of PPG DP50LF primer and a couple coats of MTK single stage on them. Should outlast me?

Got a few more hours in on the lv tonight. I cleaned out the booth last night and got the roof in there. I figure I will finish fixing it, grind it down and prime it in there now.

Kinda a pain working on a few of those pieces just for the fact that some of them are a compound curve so that have to be curved 3 ways. Went pretty good, would have gotten a little more done, but I ran out of wire in the welder so I had to call it a night.

Hopefully will be working on it tomorrow night and Friday. I'm hoping I can get the roof wrapped up this weekend.

Did you beat the compound curve in on a bag with a hammer first or how did you do that?

Not so much a bag, but there was a little hammering. More work with the 3" flat plier and then back to the hammer.

I would say mostly the way I did it was start tack welding it on one end and then start working the piece to the other side. As I worked it to the other side I would have to tack it, massage it with the hammer to create the compound curve and then tack it again, massage, tack....etc......

Worked pretty good, when I was all done tacking the piece in I slowly welded the entire piece and then ground it off. Then with my hand on the back side so I could feel the minor high and low spots and with small fast taps with hammer I worked the metal into place.

Both spots I did on the left and right side turned out well. More to do tonight, but hoping to get all the metal work done on the roof tonight. I'm going to take Friday off of work and dedicate the entire day to the lv. I just need to get roof back on and finsished up this weekend. It's taking a lot of time and I want to move onto the tailgate and get that re-skinned.
