hey buck, what kind of paint gun are you using? we borrowed a paint gun from a friend, he used to do touch ups on cars. the gun is a Sato MiniJet. http://www.ccs-express.com/mini-jet.htm it seems like it will get the job done, may need to fill it up a few times though. do you have any tips/ suggestions for me when i start to paint?

Few more hours on the LV tonight. Pretty much spent the entire night working on the roof. I got the remaining patches welded in and ground down, I guess happy with everything the way it turned out. It will look a lot better when primer is on it.

I did have to make a managment decision tonight. I really debated on whether I should just go after the inside of the roof with the grinder an take it down to some nice shiny metal? After finishing all my patches I decided not to, reason(s): There is quite a bit of pitting on the inside of the roof in certain areas around the edges of the roof. If I was going to grind it down to bare metal I would have to grind awfully deep to get in some areas and I felt the metal would be thin and weak. I also thought the roof made it 40 years with absolutely no primer or rust protection, by the time I epoxy primer the outside and paint it with todays paints, it would probably outlast me anyway? Well I called my body man buddy and talk to him for a bit. What he suggested and I did is brushed it down with this sauce from SEM, basiclly phosferic acid in a bottle and a rust converter.

I used a heavy duty wire wheel and went over the roof several times making sure I had 99% of the rust off. Actually after wire wheeling it, it actually looked pretty good and clean. I brushed on 3 light coats of that stuff. Says on the bottle that it dries to a greyish color, can be filled or primed over in 24 hours. So, that's what I did. I will let it dry until tomorrow and then lay down a coat or 2 of DP50LF and single stage ureathane on top of that. I can't imagine I see a failure in my life time.

Also bent up the new inner roof channels I need to start welding in tomorrow on the drip edge prior to the roof going in. They look good and should go in well, exact same dimensions as the orginal.

1. I'm using a Campbell Hausfeld gun, I can't figure out how to link it directly? If you goto http://www.chpower.com/ and then type in model DH790000AV in there serch you should get it. Nothing to fancy, retails for about $100 bucks. My body man buddy uses the good Binks and Sato jet guns, we can never tell the difference from what he's sprayed or me?

Those Sato Jet guns are nice. But your right about the cup, depends on what type of painting your doing. That gun is probably fine for touch up and small jobs, but for a big job you need a bigger cup? Kinda leads into your 2nd question.

2. If your doing a large surface or entire vehicle, once you start painting you don't want to stop for 10 to 15 minutes and mix more paint. Even if you pre-mixed the paint and had to stop to pour more in the cup, that would still suck and you might get dry spray spots over the entire vehicle.

What type of primer and paint system are you using, ie: Singe stage or are you using a base clear?

Matt, what kind of compressor (cfm at psi you spray at) do you use? I've been wondering if a 12.4 SCFM at 40 psi, 10.2 SCFM at 90 psi rated 60-gallon compressor (I know they're lying about the 7 horsepower) compressor is enough volume to drive HVLP properly.

That is exactly what I'm using, must be the same compressor. Drives the HVLP gun just fine, I have never ran out of air.

thanks, Matt...its a Sears 150-psi. most I could get for the money, seemed like.

Put in an entire day on the lv today. Went good, but a little slower than I thought.

First thing I did when I got out there in the morning was spray a couple coats of DP on the inner roof, wanted to get that drying. Also sprayed the inside of those inner drip rail braces I made the night before.

Those inner pieces I had to make for the drip rail took some time since they change shape on each end. Little custom work on each end and some massaging, everything came into place. I made everything and then tacked it in. Reason for tacking it in right away was that I still needed to fit those x-member pieces and I wanted to make sure everything was going to fit with the roof on before I poured the coals to those braces. I would hate to fit the roof and find out that something was interfering with the roof and have to start cutting and grinding stuff out.

I fit the roof on in primer one time today and then tacked those 3 x-members in place. I had made marks on the side prior to taking those off so I knew where they went. After I tacked them from the inside I remove the roof and then welded those x-members and finished welding the inner drip rail pieces. After I finished welding everything I went back on the inside and outside and cleaned everything up with a flap disc. Then I went over everything again with a wire wheel. Rolled it outside and sprayed 2 good coats of DP around the whole thing. I don't think I'm going to see any rust up there in my lifetime :)

I sprayed a coat of single stage on the inside of the roof. I could spray any color since it is going to be covered up. I'm using all those 1/2 pints of test colors I got for my wife that she doesn't like ;) Get my money out of them some how?

I need to get a new bottle of welding gas in the morning and then pick up this other sauce I'm going to be using tomorrow when I put the roof on. I'll wait to tell you about that to keep it a suprise. Also still need to fish a wire through the A pilar, drip edge and then the middle x-member for the dome light. Going to do that tomorrow just prior to putting the roof back on.

God I can't wait to be done with the roof crap.............

Didn't get the full monty day in today. I had to run another cruiser mission up in Canada today. Picked up a BJ40 / Diesel for a buddy of mine who used to work for me and currently flys Chinooks heli's over in Iraq right now. The plan was to meet the guy at 10 am, but things got a little delayed so by the time I got home it was after 1.

Anyway, the goal was the roof today and I got that back on and welded down. I can officially say that I am sick of spot welding now  Those few hundred holes I drilled out over a month ago had to be welded back in, it sucked. Prior to putting the roof on I had to run the wire for the dome light. I had wrote on the drip rail in several places so I wouldn't forget, once that roof was on it wasn't coming back off. I also wasn't going to use that carpet pad material that Toyota had in the roof between the braces. I got this stuff that was specificly made to go in between 2 panels to deaden vibration. Like when you open your car hood and see that stuff that has oozed out between the inner panel and hood.....same stuff. I had the gun from a previous project about 10 years ago, so that worked out good. Put a bead of that stuff on the x-members prior to installing the roof.

Had my neighbor come over and my wife got involved, went good. Roof went on and most of the holes lined up again with the exeption of a few that were a 1/16" or 1/8" off. I kinda figured that since I had cut pieces out and welded on that roof panel, figured a little tweaking would occur.

Few pics of that special sauce oozing out between the roof skin and x-members. Still have to grind the welds down on the top and bottom, but probably won't get to that until during the week.

Got landscaping to do tomorrow........
