Good advice, thank you. I thought I would put the drawer on the right because the weight of my recovery gear would better offset the driver weight day to day. Hmmm. I'll definately look into this!

And "that other site" is great. Rob is very helpful and has organized the info on there very well.

Hey 1407Driver, what motivated a shift from a sleeping platform to just storage space with the new design?

Ditto. Rob's effort is appreciated by many of us. It's made it VERY easy for me to order switches and o2 sensors w/o digging thru threads and chit chat.

More important, can't wait to see this built! Just wish I'd been closer and called first rights on your old platform!

A few things- Santa brought a fridge this year. It would fit on the platform, but I wasn't interested in buying/building a drop down slide. And with a little one on the way, it may be some time before I'll be sleeping in the cruiser. Also, I often have the need for a locking compartment with the work I do. Maybe it's all just an excuse to do another mod...

Need some advice/help on cargo barrier

Ok guys, I've been going over my plan for the cargo barrier and need some help. I'm trying to ensure side curtain airbag compatibility while being able to capture the 3rd row grab handle mounts for support. My alternative is to drill into the side of the cargo compartment, like this:

and I'd rather not. After pouring over pictures of cargo barriers built for other vehicles with curtain airbags, it seems a few things are evident. First, most, but not all of them seem to end at or near the outboard edge of the 2nd row seat headrests. Like this:

Makes sense. Second, I can't seem to find any that utilize an upper mounting area. Also makes sense, however, there must be a way to capture the grab handles seeing as how the handles themselves aren't in the way of the curtain. I know with the "T" shape of the barrier and the center divider in my plan, structurally I wouldn't need an upper attachment point, but I want one for extra strength and the ability to remove all parts except for the cargo barrier. What I REALLY need is a picture or diagram of the deployment pattern /stowed position of the curtain airbag. I am fully aware of the risk involved with an endeavor like this. But, it's a chance I'm willing to take considering the drastic increase in safety I will gain by having the barrier. Anyone able to shed some light?

Ok, I answered my own question. Well, partially. I found a drawing of the curtain airbag in the FSM:

So, it looks like the airbag goes all the way to the rear corner of the vehicle. I would deduce that it doesn't just attach that far back, but in fact has "pillows" for the 3rd row as well. I still have not found any pics of the bags deployed. Also, capturing the rear grab handles is probably out because I think the bag extends down from inboard of the handles. Anyone able to confirm or deny?

I understand the '03 LC has "optional" side curtain airbags. Where is the identifier/tag/label located on the '03+?

Fantastic drawing for the cargo space! Cna't wait to see how it develops.

After looking at this thread, I realized I haven't really posted a good pic of what she looks like currently.
Loaded with gear.

I think I'm going to put some more rake back in. I don't like the handling when she's loaded. Also suffer a bit of torque steer if I have to jump on it, and the occasional thunk from the front shocks reaching full extension. I don't mind a bit of stink.

Edit- running boards are actually off, but you get the idea.

I think I agree on the stance.

To my knowledge it was an option on 03-04 but I think the vast majority of those cruisers have that option. You'd have a hard time finding one without it.

Sit in the back seat and look at your pillars, it's stamped on there.

Very clean look. Like it a lot.

With a little one on the way you'll need to sort out a rear tether anchor for the car seat in your design as well. Currently it's located about 9" off the back of the 2nd row in the cargo area under the carpet. Most car seats don't use it when the baby is facing backward, but once you turn the car seat around it's certainly needed.

Thanks a million! I didn't think about that. I knew the seat had the child seat latches for infant seats.... You just saved me from screwing up my build! I'm on it...

Isn't there a switch to deactivate the side curtain airbags? I have one on my 05 LC? I think it says RSCA? I think at least from my recollection from the owner's manual they recommend using it if one is off roading and might be in a position to be tilted a lot. Since the sensors might falsely sense a roll over and deploy.

Yes, that's correct. But, they only turn off the roll sensing function (as I understand it), but not the side impact sensors. So, the bags would still deploy in some crashes- which is what I want!
