So, now that I'm not bothering with the wrist pin bushings, I can finally put some of this s*** back together.

Something I found interesting. This page of the FSM says you shouldn't be able to push the pins into the piston unless they're warmed to 60c.

This brand new set, they slide in at cool temps. Feel much like a large syringe as you push it in, and will slide out with gravity with regular oil. ( not with the sticky red s*** tho) Pretty much exactly how the bushings in my rods feel, so I'm not going to worry about it anymore.

Had to have a look to get my head around which way the pistons face. They have this little notch for the oil squirters.

Rods also have a front and a back to them. Book says " Protrusion" to the front. Protrusion SINGULAR. So after much searching I see they mean these, and not the small protruding number on the other side.

Would have saved me some googling if they'd put the damn S in there...:lol:

Tempted to slide them in with the old bearings as place holders, just so I can get things rolling. :hmm:

Outta curiosity, can you weigh one of your piston/pin/rod assemblies? Curious how they compare to a 2LTE assembly. I think the 2LTE assembly is about 2kg bang on.

Haha, I don't think we have one. Never really weigh food, just ourselves after eating too much of it. :lol:

It's hard to find a spec for the protrusion. It's not in the FSM which seems crazy, but it ain't there. :rolleyes:

So I used this page from an Aus engine builder.

My max protrusion was 22 thou. Was actually a bit of a variation between the six.

Got it torqued to about 60 now. Going up in 20 ftlb steps. :meh:

Figure I'll get it somewhat close, and then let it think about what it's done overnight, and do it again tomorrow morning.

Could see dropping the lump back in wed or thurs.

At least having the original on for a bit will give me a better idea of the improvement a new one makes.

My catch can Provent200. Working well. Used clear tube so I can see the oil in it. Runs better with
clean! fresh air feed back to intake. I got a bulk filters too that were on sale from some diesel place.

I googled the s*** out of a cold valve adjustment spec, in the end I just put them where they're supposed to be. I'll have to check them after it's warmed up for a while.

Feels a little tighter to turn over with the wrench, I guess that's a good sign.

Haven't quite figured how I'm going to achieve the 327ftlbs on the crank pulley bolt... think something stronger than a plate attached to the two 12mm bolts would be needed, which seems to be what the book shows.

I'll deal with that later tho. Probably going to be a 2 person job so someone can hang onto the engine.

Was looking at the alternator mount, there's a second place to out the bracket a couple inches higher. I wonder if that's for LHD models so it's not so close to the steering box. :hmm:

There's a 325lb torque wrench at work I was going to borrow for this, but I put in the vice to see how hard it was to max it out.

Pretty much as hard as I could before dislocating my a******, so that's how tight I made the pulley bolt with some blue locktite.

Now to get this ****er off the stand and hanging from the ceiling again...

Was looking at the alternator mount, there's a second place to out the bracket a couple inches higher. I wonder if that's for LHD models so it's not so close to the steering box. :hmm:

I'd have moved it up but there's a few things to change, and the oil drain from my vac pump might interfere with turbo elbow.



I wanted to delete this greasy monstrosity. Old AC compressor mount. I've seen them sell for an alarming amount of money in the classified section. :hillbilly:

Thanks, it's mostly been fun...the waiting for wrong parts not so much, but it did force me into bodywork I'd have ignored for another year :lol:

I only had rear flares, and they're already gone to the interior, but yeah let me know about the bracket.

Might have to wait till I redo the alternator mount, because you might need the tensioner piece to go with it?
 
You got it. And you’re right, would be best to get the whole setup if you end up not using it. You referenced Dan at the 4X4 shop in an earlier thread. He shipped a 12HT (and trans/t-case/axles etc) to me years ago. Also picked up a 61 identical to yours from Radd several years ago. Really enjoyed my time in Vancouver and the island. Lots of good cruiser folks in your neck of the woods. If the current state ever returns to normal I plan on making another trip up there to spend some time and enjoy the area.
 
Yeah it's a good place to live, so long as you bought a house before everything went insane.

I can't fault Dan for the first round of wrong bearings, that was before I knew what was inside.

Second set of wrong bearings, and forgetting to order the wrist pin bushings after a pretty long phone call about them...oh yeah, I blame the s*** outta him for that. :lol:

But, s*** happens, and he's been good about it. Paying for return shipping etc, so I'm not going to light the fuse on that bridge.


I'm in the process of ordering a new turbo, so when I put that in, I'll probably deal with the alternator stuff.

Some part of my brain is stopping me from ordering the $$$ turbo until I have this thing running.

It's possible I'm a pessimist...:lol:
 
I've thought of yanking my A/C a few times now as it would help keep my little motor cooler while towing without that big dirty condenser blocking air flow to the rad. But with the heat this past summer, think I'll be keeping it intact! Will let the motor sweat instead of me, haha.

Nice work on the rebuild Ryan. Nice to see it all come together once you got the right parts.
