I actually quite enjoy hand forming the steel patches, that part is fun.

It's the painting and fairing I want nothing to do with.

Did too many boat hulls.


Used to have a neighbor in the marina who'd do the varnish on one side of his boat every year, and alternate.


Kinda liking that idea.
 
I can get into forming & fabrication. I’m not fond of filler, sanding, and fancy paint work.

Although after working with fibreglass, carbon fibre, and laminations, it has got much easier.

Too many people overlook stripes when sizing turbos.

Also, blast some snot of some sort on the inside of those fender flare plug welds. 👍

Oh yes, snot blasting will happen. I tend to hose the thing down till it's an oily waxy mess inside every panel.

I agree, the stripes equal at least 5psi of boost on their own.

What I found interesting, was the thrust washers that were installed actually measured ok.

So to me, that means it's either always been like that, or it's the crank that wears and not the thrust washers, which seems wrong to me.

I'd have thought the replaceable washers would be a softer material. Or they just figured ****it, no one will ever take one of these apart. :lol:

Down close to the minimum with them installed, but the new washers have a finish that isn't entirely smooth, so I could see that polishing off pretty quickly. Like the first couple times I sit at a traffic light with the clutch in.

Checked the above with the digital caliper and got .06mm which is definitely down at the tighter end of the spectrum, but above minimum (.04mm to .24mm) so I think I'm good.

Thinking about it, if that number above was TOO small, one could put the standard sized washer on one side, and oversized on the other. I don't see any reason why that'd matter.
Yeah, it'd be a fraction of a mm forward or aft, but with too much float it'll be doing that all the time anyways. Mines clearly been doing it for years. :meh:

Funny thing about all this honing bs is, the whole process took all of 5 minutes. Removing the skirt oilers took the longest.

In and out about 20 times, with just a little wd40 so it made practically no mess at all. Hard to see but the lines are pretty close to the same angle as the factory crosshatch.

Puddle on the floor...every time I rotate this bitch, a glug of oil comes out of somewhere. :meh:

I also threw in some new main bearings today. There's a lot of weirdness with 12ht's with variations in bearings. There's a number stamped in the block which supposedly tells you which of the "standard" bearings you need.
Most companies just seem to sell one standard size.

It's a fraction of a thousandth difference between 1 and 3, seemed to measure the same for me, but that's reaching the limit of the precision of what I have to measure with.

This seems like the more important number. Plasti gauge says the oil clearance is good, so I'll live with that.

Pretty much bang in the middle of the .032-.068mm range they want. :)

And lastly, I put the new rings into the pistons. Checking the gaps on all 18 was kinda tedious, but I knew if I skipped one it'd be the one that was too long.

They were all good tho. Minimum is .2mm which is the important number. Most were .3-.4mm.

To hedge my bets I ordered another set from australia. They appear to be chilling at the airport. So hopefully something will actually fit when it eventually gets here.
 
Nice work man! Sorry to hear of the frustrations with wrong parts. I went through some of that when I had my motor apart too. Mine had larger big end bearings than the pre 1990 2LT. Of course I ended up with the smaller ones instead of the right ones. Crank went to 8 bolt from 6 that year too. Nice to know Toyota is continually tweaking things at least.

It's a fraction of a thousandth difference between 1 and 3, seemed to measure the same for me, but that's reaching the limit of the precision of what I have to measure with.

This seems like the more important number. Plasti gauge says the oil clearance is good, so I'll live with that.

Pretty much bang in the middle of the .032-.068mm range they want. :)

And lastly, I put the new rings into the pistons. Checking the gaps on all 18 was kinda tedious, but I knew if I skipped one it'd be the one that was too long.

They were all good tho. Minimum is .2mm which is the important number. Most were .3-.4mm.

To hedge my bets I ordered another set from australia. They appear to be chilling at the airport. So hopefully something will actually fit when it eventually gets here.

Nice work man! Sorry to hear of the frustrations with wrong parts. I went through some of that when I had my motor apart too. Mine had larger big end bearings than the pre 1990 2LT. Of course I ended up with the smaller ones instead of the right ones. Crank went to 8 bolt from 6 that year too. Nice to know Toyota is continually tweaking things at least.
Yeah it's been a tad annoying, but is what it is.

Only real upside to how dry it's been, driving the 40 without the roof on for 2 months hasn't been a great hardship.


Now if only the guy selling turbos would answer his ****ing emails...:lol:
 
Rumour has it, the bearings are headed my way finally.

I've pretty much decided to go with a wink turbo setup, he's been hard to get hold of but he was on vacation, so I guess he gets a little slack for that. He's back in the shop next week, so I'm hoping I can get one ordered and on it's way so I can install it while the engine is out.

Other options were Munro and Gturbo, but Munro's soonest delivery time was late November, which is kindof a drag, otherwise I'd have tried them.

Gturbo, the extra money is probably worth it if I was planning 25psi, but I'm not. (Famous last words...:lol:)

Then there's Kinugawa and Mamba, which are cheaper, but I don't know. Seem to be similar quality, and a few dodgy reviews on the internet. :meh:

I used the converter on the oil pan, but just engine paint to cover. I did give the frame a coat of the other s***, so I guess we'll see. :meh:

Pan has some old brazing repairs, and was painted with epoxy I think, so wire wheeling that s*** off seriously upped my beer consumption for the day.


lastly, the executive decision has been made. **** the wrist pin bushings. **** em man.

Apparently someone forgot to order them, which is an impressive feat considering all the s*** that's happened.

But, I figure mine have no real wear that I can detect, so it'll probably take a couple hundred K for them to be an issue and by that time, who knows what the world will look like.

Could all be bitches for Lord Humongous and none of this will matter.
