Have the blow by routed down along the frame under the drivers seat with what I'm pretty sure is a washing machine drain hose...
I did that, the smell is awful! When idling it comes right up inside. You want to change that soon.

I vent mine from a hose into the frame too. Works great. My old short block had lots of blow by and made a stinky cloud. My new one I never smell anything and it gives just a faint puff.

I'm so used to the smell from all the 3b's I've had I think I almost missed it.

Maybe I should aim it at my front driveshaft to complete the effect.

For now anyways I want it somewhere I can see it easily, so this works. I'm curious to see how it changes after a some driving.

I'll grab insurance today and maybe go for a longer drive. Oil filters won't be here for a week so I don't want to drive it too much before I can change the oil.

If it's oozing that much oil, T the line and send it down each frame rail behind the transfer as rust protection 😆

Haha I hope it isn't that bad

I'm not sure how long it takes rings to seat, I've read some pages where it took a thousand k or more.

Apparently the 6bt's take ages to seat. I'm sure it'll settle down after a few weeks.

I'm not exactly worried about it. Tailpipe is already cleaner than it was.

Although I will probably leave some black smoke on the ladysmith hill today...:hillbilly:

I think that she'll run just fine!

Yep, so far so good. I didn't hear the rattle that started all this on my brief test drive...if that is still there, I figger it's either the wastegate or something in the dash, and I'll learn to ignore it.

I won't have to ignore the wastegate for long hopefully...:grinpimp:

Kinda funny, did a quick browse on amazon to see if I could get an oil filter a bit sooner, the wix 51627 is out of stock, but where it shows "customers also bought" it's the fuel filter for the toyota diesels...so obviously some other 12ht owners shop there

This looks like a useful site...

There's a lot more versions of this filter than I'd thought.

I have a bunch of the toyota ones coming, but canada post is walking them here.

I've heard the best way to seat rings on a diesel is to load it hard for a good long drive. You can borrow my camper if you want; that should do it, haha. Some of the VDJ78 trucks (v8 diesel) in Aus that have only been used light in the city apparently had issues with the rings not seating well and going through some oil as a result. Same went for the older motors too apparently.

I gotta jump on the Toyota filter bandwagon. I usually buy a Baldwin from Lordco or Wix from Napa. Just went out today, and both are out because of "supply chain issues." :bang: 2LTE uses same filter as 1HDT/1HZ/1PZ/1KZ oddly enough. Ah well, this is a good thing I guess, as the Baldwin/Wix are sub par quality anyhow; I was just too lazy to plan ahead and order Toyota ones. Was handy to have stock on shelf in town.

Agh… Canada post! I sent a router by Canada post. Guaranteed 4 day delivery. 3 months, & 17 phone calls later Canada post finally figured out how to get it back to me. They claimed they needed a unit number, which cisco insists isn’t a thing. After three months it came back with one write on it… but it’s still indicates it’s undeliverable!

I haven't had much luck finding anything local.

Bumper to bumper could get the wix ones, but it took a few days and was 40 bucks which is nuts.

Genuine toy from that toyota parts direct place was just under 20 bucks... even rockauto the wix was more that that.

I should have looked into 3b filters on there. The old ph8a is pretty much the most common filter on earth I think.
Edit...yup cross references to almost 1300 part numbers

For the break in, yeah, I'm gonna have to drive like an a****** for a while I guess

Not the right ones for me, Nick maybe?

My oil filters still say Sept 7 delivery, but they're already in Richmond, so they should be this week. We'll see. :meh:

Took the truck to work yesterday, drove like an Albertan, (still got passed by Alberta plates) and I'd say the blow-by is down 75% from the pipe. Only marginally more than the 3b now.

So I'm taking that as a good sign.

Sooner I can stop this drive like an a****** break in period the better

Yeah, those would work for me; just not worth the drive is all.

Nice to hear the motor is breaking in successfully!

Yeah so far so good. Only 100kms on it as yet so it's pretty early. I didn't think I'd see the blow-by decrease for a few hundred k.

And if the blow-by stayed where it is now I'd be fine with it. Seems totally back to normal.

Funny how much different the engine sounds. Can really hear the valves clicking. Seats aren't padded by crap anymore.

I also feel like it's noticeably harder to get to max boost.

I assume that's because it doesn't have to ram that air into a s***ty clogged intake anymore

Probably more like it's just running stronger so by the time max boost comes along I'm already going too damn fast.

How does it run? How many minutes did you shave off of the ol' accelerometer to get to 88mph?
88mph? This ain't Alberta...80kph is more like it.

Runs good. Considerably cleaner tailpipe, and no sign of the noise that started all this.

Adjusted the valves and changed the oil today. Apparently I was huffing some fumes when I got them "close" before starting it, because *******.

They were not close:lol:
