at first , i bought brake caliper paint , but the total lack of a close to original 3FE pewter , brought me to these 2 products , close as i could find , plus the heat rating is higher too ..... win win

for those who are not aware , if you follow the later FJ60 , 2F & 3FE valve cover nuts
90176-08014 bread-crumbs , ........

Ghost’s cover is final finished and ready to get my approach on a TOYOTA sheet metal valve cover , that uses a OEM epdm rubber gasket ….

I can’t think 🤔 of another toyota vehicle platform that regressed after the late 1970,s aluminum TEq valve cover revolution is like the caveman making the wheel round , then making it square again later ?

Puzzling 🤨….

I bet @cruiseroutfit knows the dark-3F-web 411 on this ….🤣

So ……

how I approach installing any toyota rubber valve cover gasket is a mix of absolutes that were passed down by the guys with grey beards still wearing the Ivan Stuart rainbow 🌈 striped technicians uniform shirts back in the day ….

It’s been 2 decades or more since I installed a 3FE one so a bit of FSM refresh was in order …

Surface prep is 9/10 ,s of the law and that goes for the groove in the bottom of the cover , steel or aluminum…

The repeated wipe downs of the contact surface of the head to as bright as possible is key , and so is some strategic use of black FIPG oil pan and cam shaft housing sealer …

Take note the locking tabs details on the rubber oem gasket , I was shocked this puppy msrp usa was just shy of 40$ ..?

I always dry fit first , this ensures I have the correct gasket …

I apply a thin-moderate skim-kote to the entire rear , frint and all 4 radius turns too till then straighten out ..

Manually and carefully work the rubber gasket Around a bit at a time
In several passes ..

Once it’s it carefully flip cover and using a sanitary surface slam that puppy down hard , plumb , level and square …

I go at it like 3-4 times this seats all those important locking tabs and prevents it falling out or getting hung up
on one of the 4 male threaded studs , especially the last 1 in the rear …

See the card stock can slide in between the baffles ….

Hence the FIPG ….

One of the hence,s anyway ..

Next up is using a disposal acid brush and the surgical FIPG install on the cover lip grooves them selves …

I add a swipe in the middle to keep the centers from coming in-Keyed after the flat kid gloves on the flat surface …

Cylinder head prep as best you can , using a low odor mineral spirits will NOT evaporate and allow the cover to do its thing snugging and expanding in place as you star pattern down the 4 sparky new @cwags12 timeless 90341- nuts ….😎

Dry epdm rubber and dry cast iron = binding and pinching ….

This is NOT what you want ….fyi

Both the front shaft seal and reservoir O-ring were seeping long term and doing the front shaft seal in-place was not a option because a all 6 sides plastic tooth brush bath using low odor mineral sprits was my way here , as the classic fossilized dirt and oil cryp-ta-night stuff was all caked on the under side ….😧

I used black engine enamel, and several kotes of gloss clear after a solid prep and new front shaft seal carefully pressed in with a tap tap on a deep socket ..

All new OEM hardware of course too ..

So ….

The front shaft seal was AWOL in the USA ?

And the O-ring is now disc/ NLA ?

Smooth move TOYOTA ! 😕

So my trusty go-to is the metric green R-134A o ring assortment TOYOTA vehicles specific ….

Polish up the inner bore and apply a skim-kote FIPG …

But it was late when doing this into the AM and I applied black NOT the transaxle oarnge ? 00295-01281 ….SH#T 😦😧😮

At least It’s not all bolted back on the truck and ℹ realized this now ….🤔

And yes , I removed all parts with the black and cleaned them and applied the orange 🍊, especially that o-ring on the main resoviour to pump connection that is prone to simply gravity leak !

Oh man.....its like my buddy that helped me lift my rear axle into place saying: "you may as well remove the front axle, blast, paint, and restore it now!"
I ended up doing just that.

That cylinder head cover treatment will only go one step further if you do the same thing on the intake manifold! 😂

a bit of welcome pipe dreaming time for the big-picture future build theme plan R&D as i bump into it , i have to save it here for sure .....

I love the bottom one. A lot of the HJ61 imports in Australia came with those decals or the red equivalent. In good condition it looks amazing.

The one above it is actually off the limited edition Silver Series 150.

Only 50 of them were made and they were to celebrate 150 years of European settlement in South Australia. That is one of the strangest limited edition vehicles ever. Such an odd thing to celebrate on a Landcruiser!

The Silver series wasn't as rare, about 500 were made. They were to celebrate 25 years of Landcruiser in Australia. They are pretty much a Sahara but with a low roof. You still see them about every now and then.

There is a bit of info on them available online, have a look Matt, you'll love it!

i plan a double-decker kustom-theme design , by incorporating the right 2 or maybe 3 ?

- above the door handles thin strip , maybe ?

- the PHAT main focus mid section

- a complimentary lower rockers layout

- all Tied in with a nice array of upper and lower hatch / tail gate wrap around theme continuing stripes too …

- i designed the body graphics below to be a period-retro modern-twist for a concept vision build , with really nothing to go by ?
there was only 1 SUPER HILUX ever made and he is still evolving too ..

Ok …

Back to the wrenches , all new OEM hardware whenever and wherever possible and well ……

OEM final inspection torque period circa. paint dots on all fasteners of importance and mane a few not so important too …

I like oem PLANT A11 pink and pure yellow , I have seen every color in the rainbow 🌈, I need to get the green-ish-aqua marine blue to balance things out and not go too crazy I guess too ….🤣

Haha I didn't know your Super Hilux decal was custom made! I thought you found some crazy one off prototype hidden deep in a Toyota lab somewhere in Japan.

Now I know it's full Skunk Workz, that makes it even better!

Trying to wrap things up on the whole 3F-E De-Smog that incorporates only TOYOTA OEM parts …

The EGR exhaust manifold big giant double ended threaded union gave me the most time to actually find something toyota genuine parts that would suit the task just as nicely as the OEM air injection rail OEM service plugs do .

There made out of what I can only describe as non-cabin-based-metal / metals of some kind ?

Perhaps there simply a non-bling type of stainless steel similar to my various Alternator adjustment bars I have reproduced and also dreamed up out of thin air ?

The EGR tube delete plug is totally awesome and at the end of the day the next unicorn 🦄 parts hunt for a suitable metal crush-type gasket o-ring washer , was spoon 🥄 fed to me then and there in the form of JDM copper …

Long term anti corrosion it will last the test of age and time for sure

The plug itself is actually pre-bling-plated in super Violent Iridescence and funky pinks and blue too , not your average Toyota OEM japan spec. plating at all ?

I wonder 💭 why this type and look of plating is not more common place in the Toyota kingdom ?

Maybe they where going for a color matching theme with the fly Factory pink pre coated threads mystery substance stuff ?

We shall see how it holds up to the manifolds heat on a hot as your manifolds in the summer time sunshine conditions…

I decided I would not wait to find that out and hit this puppy with 3 nice mist coats of krystal klear ceramic exhaust system aerosol poison I sourced at Advance Auto , I know this stuff works well long term from using it to final out countless 2F intake and exhaust manifolds post machine shop Siamese faces resurfacing sandwiched together like on the side face of the cylinder head final install …

Below tech. Pics :
