Great questions. He cut the old cat out and then welded the magnaflows (two connected together) into the gap. It took him less than 45 mins in and out. I have 231k miles on my LC. I feel like a may have a little more power as well. However, my mileage has increased substantially. Good luck.
Which magnaflow exact pieces you got?
I wonder if you were able to pass smog check after that? I am in California which has more restrictions. Thanks

If you have a welder, you just need a cat that fits. It will pass smog if you buy a regular cat, and not a “race” cat. I’m not in Cali but did this for a merc in Md where we have smog. I’m personally not sure if there is a greater part that is a direct swap. Any exhaust shop or small shop with a welder can help

I have these exact same symptoms. Its happened to me about 5-6 times over the course my ownership of 4yrs with my 06 100. My rig only has 135k on the clock, so its fairly low mileage. But this has happened to me while up at elevations exceeding 8000 ft. Sputtering all of a sudden, loss of power, gas pedal doesnt do anything, wont idle, and eventually sputters out and dies. Then it wont start for anther 15-20 minutes. I've gotten in the habit of releasing the gas cap as I ascend at various increments, never have gotten any vapor or gas gurgling (although i've certainly seen it on other rigs).

Last time i went up to 10,000 ft, this happened and it threw multiple misfire codes and the P0430 "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2" code. Once i got back, I had my mechanic check it and he could not figure it out. We started replacing parts in the VVTi system.... although now that I've found this thread im fairly confident that was a waste of money... My cat code will not go away and my exhaust definitely smell rich.. He told me my cat is as good as done. Here in CA, there are NO other CARB legal replacements except for dealer parts... thats about $4k in parts alone for both cats..

-Update I have replaced the O2s, and the code persists despite about 1500 miles on the new ones.. So it wasnt my O2s lol..

I guess I'll start with the fuel pump replacement and double check all the lines in the back....

06-07 fuel pump. They fail to deliver adquie pressure/flow, in its low speed. We see mostly when OAT high (hot) after pull up a hill or passing, where RPM are sustained high (~3,000 +) for a few minutes or more. The fuel pump runs in high speed, when RPMs are high. Than as we let off gas (RPMs drop), fuel pump speed drops to low. At this point fuel flow inadequate. If running a scanner, checking for codes at the time, before key off. We see BK1 & BK2 to lean condition DTC.

This generally does not have effect on the CAT. Unless running lean most of the time. ECM works to correct fuel trims. But we may still run on lean side, which results in higher cylinder temp. But again, not so high as to damage CAT generally.

I'd check:
Fuel pressure. But this will not usually reveal the 06-07 issue with fuel pump.
Test for vacuum leaks.
Test compression.
Inspect (with directional borescope) S.A.I. pump filter.

Notes:
Do not prolong idle. Damaging to CATs

Then Consider replacing Charcoal Canister, if:
If ever add gas to fuel tank after pump handle auto shut-off. You may have flooded charcoal canister.
If ascended a rock road after with more than ~7/8 of a tank of gas. You may have flooded charcoal canister.
If ever "boiled fuel". You may have flooded charcoal canister.
Smell stall fuel.

Thanks for the great info! My mechanic did a pretty thorough run through of fuel system, and walked me through it, so I have a hunch that its the fuel pump issue that wont show itself until it does and you sputter out and die on the trail.

In your experience, does replacing the pump with a brand new OE unit, alleviate the problem?

I'm fairly certain my CAT id dunzo. I've cleared the CEL codes multiple times, and they come back almost immediately (even after replacing them). My mechanic told me they were slow to react, so he recommended changing all 4, which I did. The P0430 code comes back after about 15-30 minutes of driving. I've actually removed the downstream O2s from the exhaust stream all together and ran it around just to see if it was the O2 sensor (or related electrical gremlin) or bad CAT. With the O2 removed, the CEL has not come back for over 1000 miles. So... its probably the cat... $4k in dealer bills here I come ...

Charcoal cannister is next on the chopping block. May just replace it...

I'd been using Denso fuel pump (OE). But they stop making them last year. I have also used Toyota (OEM). Both corrected the fuel pump low speed issue. In about a dozen + I've R&R, not one report issue after.

I've never tired removing the o2, as a test.

When I've seen a CAT (P0430 or P0420) DTC, it's always been the CAT.
With the old (98-05), the CAT material is burnt out. With the 06-07, they look okay.

But remember. You must determine why the CAT went bad, and correct. Or risk losing another!

P0430 is BK 2 (RH side). I'd only R&R the one, not both. $2K installed.

Hey all! Just wanted to report back.. In preparation for my long trip to Colorado through the Rockys I replaced my fuel pump and charcoal cannister with Toyota Genuine OEM parts. Worried that I would be increasing and decreasing in elevation daily out on the trail from 7000 - 13000ft, I went ahead and bit the bullet.

Happy to report that I've just completed a 1500+ mile round trip through the Southern Colorado Rockys including: Ophir Pass, Black Bear Pass, Imogene Pass, Mineral Creek, Poughkeepsie Gulch, Hurricane pass, and Corkscrew Gulch among many others! Climbing from elevations of 7000 (Telluride) to over 13,000ft at the peaks of some of these passes, my 100 cleared each and every trail without issue!! Fingers crossed... im in the clear! If the issues, resurface, you'll be hearing from me lol.

Good work! CC is the final piece of the puzzle in most cases.

We always, need to make sure all system working as they're designed and correct issues, that over-filling tank first. Then R&R CC.
