downey has a steel tank and a poly tank for the fj
the poly tank is alot cheeper and seems like a deal . any advice on whichone i should buy??
thanks

dose the polly tank allow the smell of fumes out?/ is the smell really bad??

I have not used the poly tank but I have heard from a few that they are difficult to seal and allow fumes to escape. YMMV.

what do you mean dificult to seal??

i had the tank, and the old fuel sending unit wouldn't create a tight seal on the tank. there were no holes in the opening so i had to drill holes in the poly and the opening just wasn't perfectly flat, so gas smell did come through. if you go with the poly make sure you find a good thick gasket, i tried two different kinds and ended up putting aftermarket seats in and a summit tank under the bed.

Do yourself a favor and get a steel tank. You will learn to hate the poly tank. I have one and wouldn't even give it to someone. That would just be a cruel joke.

Smaller. Stinks no matter how well you seal it and it will leave you high and dry on an incline with just a little gas in the tank. Get a steel one from Cdan and be done with it.

you had the downey tank?? i spoke to fuelsafe yesterday and accorting to them they say that the gas smell seeps through the material of the tank no through a opening. according to them it is not harmful or a fire hazard. as long as the thig dosnt leak actual gas im happy i dont mind a little smell of fuel. eigther way the tank is outside in the back under the truck so i dont think it will be a problem.

who is cdan??

I put a CCOT poly tank in a '74 40. No problem with odor or fitment.
Were I to do it again, I would go with steel. Higher capacity.

I have a poly tank with no complaints.... maybe I'm just fortunate.... I also have ordered a ton of stuff from JTOutfitters with no complaints, and apparently that's like an act of God or something....

its a tough decision the steel tanks are like 300 dollars more.thats the only thing that makes them appealing. also that fuel safe says that the poly tank is more durable and less prone to dents and gouging from rocks and such.

If rocks are penetrating the tub and denting the tank - you are doing some pretty rough wheeling. Keep an eye out in the classified section - the poly tanks pop up from time to time - then you can try it and see how you like it.

Based on past discussions of this topic, the gas smell is pretty much the norm with poly tanks on the inside of an FJ40. If your truck has no top or you don't mind the smell of gas you can prolly pick one up for the cost of shipping from someone who hated theirs. I paid about $150 from TPI 4-5 years ago.

I got a price from cdan about a month ago and for my 75/08 FJ40 the TLCA/MUD cost for an OE tank was about $250 plus the ride. Your application may be different so I encourage you to find out.

I THINK THERE IS SOME CONFUSION i am talking about the tank that downey makes that is 22 gallons and mounts outside the cabin ,under the back bed, behind the rear axle.

I AM NOT TALIKING ABOUT THE REPLACEMENT POLY TANK THAT MOUNTS INSIDE UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT.

THANKS

Even If The Tank Is Mounted Under The Car Behind The Rear Axle Is There Still Problems With Gas Smell Inside The Cabin? Keep In Mind I Live In Florida And It Gets Pretty Hot Here ,if That Has Any Effect On The Preasure In The Tank Resulting In Leaking?.
Thanks For All Your Replies. Its Quite A Chunk Of Change So I Just Want To Make Sure I Make The Right Choice.

Another bit of information. When the plastic tanks first came out, there were many complaints of plastic pieces left inside the tank that plugged up filters, lines, etc. This may not be a problem, now. However if you decide to go plastic, you may want to rinse the tank with solvent before using.

Steel tank from Cdan - not too much more than the poly from CCOT.

cdan

who the hell is cdan???
