Thanks again for the help today Mike.

For those that don't Know Mike personally... he does magical things in your shop. I recommend him in any shop. Stuff gets done!

Thanks Zach, I had a blast. It was a great day wrenching with a buddy and tearing into that Blazer. You really do have an awesome new place and a dream shop. I didn't even know you snapped that picture, nice stealth move.

Technically 41.5x13.50 17R pitbull radial rockers on raceline beadlocks, and quite frankly I'm surprised they fit. I'll get some pics up and give some impressions as I drive them around for the next little bit, so far they are surprisingly well behaved and comfortable at lower speeds. Grins and giggling did interrupt us as we worked on Zach's blazer the rest of the day and occasionally looked back at the 60 with ridiculous but boyishly fun big tires on my rig. The infection for bigger than 37s is now getting worse.

I've run the 42s for about a month. I did some commuting, a camping trip, drove on the beach, got emissions tested with them, and got quite a few smiles.

We put one on the back first because I figured that would be my tightest constraint and when it fit Zach said that there wasn't any other option but to put them all on. Here are the pics from that shoe fitting.

Zach's rims are not as backspaced as my H2 rims are so they stick out a little more.

Found a little rock to do a minor flex test. The rear is just touching my bump stop as the tire touches the fender. On a harder flex I believe the tire would be into the fender.

Front has more room. Tested turning and because of the shallower backspacing they don't rub on my leaf springs. If I were really stuffing and turning I'd probably be into the front part of my fender well.

Not a big rock when playing around with these large monsters.

Realistically these are just too big for my set up. I didn't build the rig with 42s in mind so clearances are tight and gearing isn't ideal. All my temperatures were up, acceleration reduced, and braking extended. The 4bt with compounds pulled them anyways and I still didn't have a problem getting on the freeway. The rpms at higher speed obviously dropped so that was nice and I didn't notice a big hit in mileage either. I did drive a little more carefully.

I did find that these pitbulls do hum pretty good on the road. You can feel the large lugs at slow speeds hit the road but at the same time the tires are smooth. My nervous handling reduced so that tells me it's the wear on my old tires that are contributing to that. These pitbulls felt confident on the road and in the twisty mountains. They are a little more numb on feedback and at higher speed I think the softer compound on hot roadways does squirm just a little. Daily driver... probably not. Weekend warrior... better suited. The amount of sneak peaks, neck jerks and drool I saw from guy's mouth when my wife drove the truck was at a new level. Only one old man so far has given us the look of distaste and confusion.

I've got a County Fair this weekend that I'll be showing off my rig at and then the following week I'll swap back to my little shoes. It's been fun and it's now got me looking at 40s for future tire replacement sizes.

Aja .. ! way to go Mike .. ! despite how cool your 60 looks now with those big rubbers !

BTW any feedback on the LED you put on your headlights .?

Thanks Tapage.

The LED bulbs I used in my headlights have been working great. I haven't needed to use them much this summer but with daylight slipping away a little more each day I'll start using them again soon. The LED aux lights on the bumper have not been wired yet, I haven't had the urg yet to finish them up.

can you take some shots of the light pattern against a wall or flat surface .. ( light cut .? )

I can definitely see how they'd be too big on the road, but offroad, in the rocks, I bet that'd be magic.

The pics really don't do it justice... in person the whole thing just works. It reminds me of a kid's toy car that has a little body and massive tires. Combine that with sound of that diesel and it turns some heads. Mike dropped me by the tire shop to pick up my wife's car and it didn't take more than 30 secs for someone to come up and ask about it.

I got to drive it again too. :) SUCH a sweet 60.

In my quest to manage under hood temps I decided to install some hood louvers. With the power I'm putting out I have been hesitant to work towards installing my AC because that would be one more thing in the cooling row which would generate more heat. I treated myself earlier this year with a birthday gift from RunCool. These louvers are the Short & Wide 15″ Natural Aluminum Hi-Flow. They came nicely packaged and presented.

I haven't really taken a good picture of them yet but you can see where I put them in the hood in this pic.

I read stuff about louver placement and making it very basic, installed towards the front of the hood will cause negative pressure when driving so the louvers will suck out the heat verses installed near the rear of the hood will cause a positive pressure which will push air down into the louvers. I wanted to evacuate the heat so I placed them towards the front. The front of the louver is at right about the back of the radiator underneath the hood.

I did some hood rehab while I was at it. My bracing had separated from the skin so I got some 3M seam adhesive and glued it back together. I cut out the holes in the hood, sanded the whole thing down and rattle can painted it a satin white and painted my louvers. Once dry I installed the louvers with rivets and got some help to reinstall the hood on the truck.

In hindsight I think I could have placed the louvers back another 2 inches because of the way the fans blow the air but you can see heat escaping from them at stop lights and I did see some cooling performance improvement, not night and day difference but still an improvement. Too bad Dirtgypsy isn't around because he'd be proud I painted them black and not silver. Black matched the grill and other vent pieces so I think it ties in with my theme.

Those are more expensive than I thought they'd be, damn.

Can you quantify the cooling performance improvement you have seen?

Yeah, they aren't cheap. There are more options out there but I liked that these are metal and not plastic. I don't think I'd go any smaller than these though. With the 42's temps are up when pushing but I remember with the 37s that I had more capacity before heat soak and that things cooled off sooner before shutdown than without venting. I've been playing with my fan controller set points as well so that's been part of the experiment as well. Starting to wonder if I've got a signal problem i.e;, bad connection at sensor because sometimes the fans come on as expected and other times I have to manually force them on and then they work fine.

I'd still like to figure out a cold air intake set up in my system some day and may consider stronger fans. Now that summer days are numbered I probably won't worry about these until next year.
