Will it look like this when finished?

So took the 80 to a well known turbo specialist in Jeddah. He's done hundreds of installs, as well as major engine swaps, (he just completed a LS1 swap into my cousins FJ45 pickup). He's been doing this for over a decade, but has zero diesel experience. I had sourced a Safari kit, and away we went.

The thing about the Safari kit is it comes complete with everything you need. I was worried about trying Gturbo or perhaps trying to source my own CT26 1HD-T kit, but did not want to go through the hassle of sourcing individual parts. The Safari's install instructions are also meticulously detailed, with pics of every step. So that was a major upside, given the lack of true diesel specialist here in Jeddah.

Unfortunately I didn't get a pic of the complete kit as we unpacked the box.

Here's the turbo on.

Test fitting the bracket.

Apparently some 1HZ's come with holes already pre-drilled. Mine did not, so it called for drilling 2 M12 X 1.25 holes at 20mm depth.

Bracket mounted

We also had the oil pan off so we could drill the oil return line. The install instructions give you two options for the return line. Either into the block, or through the oil pan. We punched a hole 20mm below the line where the oil pan bolts onto the block.

Inside the oil pan

Connecting the intake, as well as the turbine outlet pipe. Oil feed line also routed over engine and into the top of the turbo. We also cleaned up the insulation on the AC line.

The Safari kit also includes the air box cover with the 90 degree elbow

A shot of the engine bay

So, how's it drive now?

Only got her back yesterday. We have not yet started tuning her, but went out for a spin and only managed to get 4psi at 3,000RPM in 3rd. Will be going tomorrow to begin the testing and tuning phase. We need to increase boost to 11PSI while keeping EGTs at no more than 1000F. There will be a lot of tinkering with the settings until we find the optimum.

Forgot to mention I finally had the heat shield installed. Was sitting in the back seat and forgot about it

Cut an opening in the shield for the pyro probe

The kit even has all the little details covered, such as the bracket to hold the oil feed line

Oil pressure line.Kit comes with an adaptor to accommodate oil pressure sensor

The PCV breather hose between the rocker cover and air cleaner lid

Two piece adaptor for waste gate actuator and boost pressure

Boost gauge along with previously installed pyrometer

Mashallah that looks awesome!

Great time to test worst case scenario with EGTs in the hot Saudi summer. Looking forward to hearing how the performance is!

How much did that heat shield run you btw?

@boozewz,

How'd you wind up completing the wiring from the IP for fuel cut/tach?

OE harness extension?

We just cleaned up that connector and plugged it right into the tacho pick up sensor. No extensions were used, as there was a bit of slack anyway.

Yessir. Tested last night. Currently we're at 9.5PSI max boost, with the fuel screw turned up 1/4 turn. At full load in 3rd we're reading 900F on the EGTs. What a massive difference now! The truck really picks up speed and can maintain acceleration in 3rd and 4th on the highway, all the while not crossing 900F. I still have a few more slight fuel screw adjustments I can make to get EGT up to 1000F. I may just stay at this setting and measure the fuel economy first before making any changes, as the performance upgrade has already been greater than my expectations. I am also not too bothered about increasing boost more than 9.5PSI for now. The instructions say that we can go up to 12PSI. We will get there in stages.

I have the invoice lying around for the heat shield, I'll check and get back to you. It wasn't much if I recall (Edit: @gnarlynick2072 it was SR 146...about US$ 39)

Great Build...lived in Jeddah for 8 years since 2000l but never once realized i would be a cruiser uajunkie when i get to UAE. Still yearning to start my build for the 80. However, UAE is different, the local dealer is a Ali Baba and so are so many of the shops around. Could you pass on the snorkel suppliers address, would like to order myself a good safari snorkel to get ready for Oman and Hatta before the new season.

Gotcha.

The wiring extension that was unplugged on yours, is what I need, but can't determine what it's coined, to figure out a part number.

The issue is on toydiy it shows the wiring as a complete harness, as if you can't get the individual wire for the tacho only.

You can get the snorkel from the ARB dealer in Abu Dhabi. If they don't have it in stock, they'll order to for you and should take a month.

Post up pics of your 80 when you can!

Cheers

Hmm that's the second time Arb shop in Abu Dhabi was referenced. Will go there soon post Ramadhan. Thanks. Hope to meet up when I visit Jeddah next. Hope to drive down in my 99 LC 100 :)

If you aren't dead set on the safari snorkel, why not install an OEM (Toyota) snorkel on your 80? That's what I did. Ordered all the parts from Al Futtaim. Some had to come from Japan but the price was decent and it was a breeze to install with the template from the forum.

I have this Chinese make one FJ cruiser. Trying to source one for my 80 as well. Didnt know Futtaim did one too. Will check with my source for parts in Mussaffah.

A small update. Ordered up some Fatmat sound deadening material and had that put in. Was a bit apprehensive as I've read around that the adhesive part of it sometimes tend to give off a strong odor thats difficult to get rid of. My uncle ripped out the sound deadener from his restored Jaguar as it was giving him headaches!

Thankfully, the stuff was a breeze to install, an gave off no smell at all. Its heavy as feck though!

Out came the seats and carpet

And a couple of months ago, @Mcladin was so kind as to give me a set of the rectangular front headlights that we never got in the GCC. I think these were primarily for the African and Aus market. I dig them. Sort of completes the look, and finally managed to get them installed.

I stumbled on this book on my bookshelf, completely forgetting that I even had it, and after a quick flip through, found my 80's doppelgänger.

Went on a little 950km road trip yesterday to visit a customer. The 80, now running a turbo, was a pleasure to drive. Averaged 17mpg for the trip, most of it spent on the highway doing 115-120km/h, save for a mountain pass from sea level to +6,000ft. The drive up the pass was like a dream. Pre-turbo install I'd be struggling up in 3rd, EGT's shooting up, so would need to down shift to 2nd. Now, I'm pulling hard in 3rd doing 80 km/h keeping EGT's below 900F.

Highway cruising was at 115-120km/h, 3500rpm, 650EGT's, and running between 3-5psi boost

I wouldn't mind one of these!
