Changed up the suspension for more of an after work DD. Had it setup for camping, hauling family, dogs, gear, and trailer. Since my daughter got her DL and is driving my tacoma now, the heavy suspension on the LX was a bit too stiff for running around unloaded. I Installed OME tb's, 863J springs, and an Air Lift 1000. Smoothed thing out quite a bit. Still running the 53mm and 45mm TD shocks. Would like to find some 41mm TD shocks for the front.

Started a trip and pretty sure we lost the engine. Really sad way to start the year. Towed it back home and planning to investigate more about what happened.

Edit: I'll be updating this thread as I make progress in the diagnosis and repair/engine replacement decision. Misfire on cylinder 8 and oil in intake box

Basically filled up with gas and ~2 miles down the road started to get a new engine noise. Sounded higher pitched almost like a fan that matched engine RPM. Continued to drive and then got a misfire on cylinder 8. Pulled over and checked everything over and when I restarted driving got some smoke that went away. Continued driving to a autoparts store and found oil in the intake air pipe. From there, limped towards home and tried a few other possible replacement parts, but no luck. Eventually found milky fluid in the oil (assumed head gasket) and decided to tow it instead of continuing on.
 
Well, I didn't get an alignment with the new tires. I've had the Firestone free lifetime alignment certificate on the truck since I bought it, 14 years ago. Since then they've shut down all but one Firestone center in Salt Lake. I've had the truck aligned many other times at other shops for various things, like when new ball joints were installed. With the new tires I decided to get it aligned at Firestone, take advantage of the certificate. They came back with $2,500 in repairs (new upper arms, new lower ball joints, and one new CV). Said it was so shot they couldn't even attempt to align it.

All 4 ball joints were new year before last, 555 from Cruiser Outfitters. New CVs year before that. Will be taking it to a more reputable shop, sure hard not to feel like it's a make money scam.

Aah if I have a buck for every Firestone greed and incompetence story I have heard...
Our local Firestone said they can't align my truck because it is heavily modified when it still has stock control arms and at the time stock Tokico shocks!

Ahhh yes, that's the classic "we're going to quote you such an unreasonable amount that you'll be forced to take it elsewhere because we don't want to admit that we don't know what we're doing" tactic

I'm sad to see that. I may have one of the last good Firestone stores in my little burb. Though I do remember the days when K-Mart and Sears Auto Centers practiced highway robbery and would look to replace every moving part on a front end before they could align it.

I hate that, but yeah, sounds almost standard, unfortunately. Free alignments for life*

*so long as you agree to let us do likely-unneccessary other work while you have the truck with us...

Alignment Specialists is by the hour and can be expensive if your truck is jacked (of course it isn't), but it's been perfect every time for me. Before and after the SAS.
 
This bothered me more than it should have, but my new-ish lower ball joints were already rusting. We don’t salt our roads and don’t generally have any rust problems in the PNW, but occasionally we drive on the beach.

They are 555. I know it's not a big deal but I feel like i'm under the rig every weekend and I'm getting tired of seeing it lol.

Same observation when we drove up to Lake Tahoe during a snow storm mid of December. Surface rust immediately showed up. I had to paint mine using a fine hand brush with oil-based enamel paint.

Yup! Almost immediately after seeing the first sign of salt. I just used a wire brush to clean it up, taped around, and sprayed some rust inhibitor spray.
