This stock, frame off 72-fj40 build started in January of 2013, 5 years ago, wow, and I just now have a rolling chassis. It’s been enjoyable, I think its looking good, I’m excited but kinda feeling like this is when the real work starts. I’ve already received some very appreciated and valuable information and help, with brakes, steering box, and instrument cluster etc. etc. I look forward to the dialogue, the help and possibly even helping. if you guys see anything in the pictures that dosn't look right please let me know.

I started with the small stuff i could tinker with on evenings, like the steering box, the shims are seemingly impossible to get and mine got destroyed on removal, so i purchased shim stock and used my wife's "cricut" to cut the shims and the gaskets. Two years latter when i installed it and filled it with oil, i realized i had forgotten the oil seal, so after cleaning the puddle, off it came, then back on. no leaks.

i had the steering wheel Rhino coated then epoxied the horn shroud sanded and painted it. The coating's a bit rough, it should wear in time, but it look nice and i had it done for $40.00

Your frame looks great. Can't even see any pitting so that's fantastic. Great work. Powder coat or paint? If paint, what did you use? Used SEM Rust Shield on mine. I'm also nearly 5 years in on my '72. Bought the truck in November 2013. Looks almost identical to yours, Dune Beige. Keep up the great work.

thank you, yea the frame is powder coated, Steve, the powder coater, and i have become very familiar over the past few years.

here's a few more items ive cleaned, he's coated and i rebuilt.

anyone know if i mounted these brake line clips in the correct place and if so what are these two pair of bolt holes for ?

did you powder coat your instrument cluster, and gloves bob? if not what paint did you use? I have a 75 FST and mine were painted black.

Brake line and harness support on the upper holes, fuel line on the lower holes.

Note, the upper holes (on my '73, anyway) take a 'sheet metal screw' type thread, not a machine screw thread.

Hi Al,

These are great pictures and work. I am interested in what the 2 wires that are disconnected in this picture. I am wondering where they go to? I have the same 2 wires, but all my lights work. The wiring diagram seams to indicate they are for the rear brake lights. Any ideas?

Are those new leaf springs? They look fantastic. If so, where did you get them? Stock height?

thanks guys perfect, pics are super helpful. ill fix that tomorrow , and yes the instrument cluster cover , ash tray , glove box, heater and wiper motor were all powder coated.

and then, with the help of Coolerman's web sight, i took on the Tranny and transfer, removed it, tore it down, cleaned it, i felt like it was in good shape, the truck only had 77k and the bearings felt great, gave it a good cleaning.

powder coated the transfer case and linkage, paint on the tranny new seals a gaskets. and put it back together.
it sat as seen for 8 months, no leaks, about 4 weeks ago i started noticing oil dripping out of the front output shaft seal? does that sound right? does that seal need movement to stay sealed?? i guess ill replace it but it seams odd.

oh and sorry, no the leafs are not new, stock and yes they do seem to be in great shape.

The two wires in the third picture are for a "FD engaged" light on trucks with vacuum-actuated transfer cases.

Wow man. Super nice! What paint did you use on your wheels? Or did you powder coat those too?

the wheels came from coolcruisers.com, the originals were left flat, sitting out in a walnut orchard so long the bottom inch had almost rusted completely away, if memory serves, coolcruisers stated that the wheels came to them painted black and they powder coat them the original color, they are nice
