OK folks, here is an opportunity to do something really cool as a cruiser community.

What we are working towards is figuring out a way to cleanly install a junkyard 38 gal tank under a 60/62 for pretty cheap. It was a great idea that Tim Coffey came up with and posted about in this thread.

Basically right now the only plug and play tanks are well north of $500.

Jim Chenoweth has stepped up to do the R&D on this for us. He will document the whole process and will do a step by step write up on it when he is done.

What we are going to do to say thanks for him saving us all hundreds of $$$ is to kick in on his purchase of the tank and parts. I recommend $10. The parts may run up to $300-$400, so if a bunch of us kick in we can make it easier on him.

If the swap isn't successful he will forward all the funds he receives to Woody here at ih8mud.com. No sabatoge, Woody.

If you think it's a dumb idea then move on. If you think it's a good idea PM me and I'll forward you Jim's paypal info.

Sure would be cool to drive more than 200 miles with out stoping for gas! :bounce:

first off, great idea. sounds interesting.

... is it intended to replace the spare underneath?

Yep.

one more idea before i pony up

there are a bunch of aluminum fabrication companies in perry, florida that make everything from t-tops for boats, gas tanks for boats and truck boxes. these guys are PRO's at this kind of thing and if there was more than one ordered the costs would be significantly less than a one off. i had one build me a custom tank for a boat that was 40 gallons for WAY less (custom one off tank for me) than the stock manufactured extended fj tanks available from most of the cruiser supplier websites.

if some one could draw up and put in a jpg form where the mounting tabs, fill tube, size of sender hole, etc. needed to be with actual dimensions... i would be willing to put it into cad so that the manufacturers can cut with cad routers. then, i will get bids from a couple of them on how much to produce 1, 4, 5 , 10 or some other number that the guys at this site would be willing to order. these guys are really good and will put internal baffles in the tanks if desired. they only use the DOT spec aluminum for tanks that is corrosion resistant. they weld boat tank to a special spec so making a tank for a toy ought to be easy. We can spec any aluminum thickness from .063 to .90 for this… could also even go up to almost an 1/8’ but at considerable additional cost… prolly .080 would be about right…

what you all think? especially jim.

That's a good idea, *if* the Ford tank doesn't work out.

I'd vote for trying the Ford tank first. Why?
- it's cheap,
- readily available to anybody anywhere in the country,
- and it already exists.

If the off-the-shelf solution turns out to be a dead end, then we go custom.

Thank you Euclid for posting this idea.:grinpimp:

And a big thanks to you who help out financially w/ this project.:)

Hope this isn't like public television, where 100% of the viewers reap the benefits, but only 5% pay for it.;p

Amen.

High Desert is a Subscriber! for less than the cost of 3 gals of gas, it's a good investment in research. If it works it'll cost less for this tank than the 4 jerry/nato cans (new) would cost to carry the same extra fuel into the boonies..and be wayyyy safer.

Are the vent lines on a 60 the same as on a 62? That's the only real hangup I can see with doing it for a 60 as opposed to a 62 (the original idea was for a 60, right?). If all this will work out for doing one up for a 62, count me in. I can toss in another 20 when I get payed next Monday.

Yes, the FJ60 and 62 tanks are the same, AFAIK. On a 62, the fuel strainer is replaced w/ a in-tank pump. They have the same size holes in the same places for fuel sender and fuel strainer/pump. To make this work for a FJ62, I would use a universal inline fuel pump just in front of the fuel tank, in lieu of the in-tank EFI pump. I wouldn't want to drop a full 38 gallon tank just to change a dead pump.

I got an email from Jim and he is going to order within a week or so...But I iwll let him confirm the time line...

You know that is the way it works tho :D

I sure hope not everyone thinks that way....but I am old enough to know better...and yes people will just watch and get the ideas for free... Oh wellwhat are you gonna do???
