Anyone ever thought about mounting a 40 gallon suburban gas tank in their 60??? I fiound one that I think might work for like 200 bucks....40 gallons...35 by 28 x 13 ....might have to give it a try.... Just gotta sell some stuff first....

paying way too much

that 40 gallon tank is available with all the sending units, gaskets, hanging straps, caps, etc from:

http://www.lmctruck.com/truck_catalog_page.htm

these folks at lmc have several catalogs available for restorers of vintage chevy trucks and a specialized catalog just for suburbans... they have the tank for about $ 140 plus freight.... i have always enjoyed working with them because if they say they will do something they will...

great ppl to deal with... and i am wondering why do none of the links work any more? just cut and post it into your browser. just wish they did cruisers!

i have always planned on installing a larger tank whenever my old one rots, or i need to drop it for some reason.
i cant see filling it up now, at 3 plus a gallon

you have a metal tank?

I agree about the gas prices but I would rather pay 3 a gallon than 3.75 in some small one pump town while on the road....or just plain run out...plus you don't have to fill it and it will be easioer to hook that tank up to my new gas gaugue...all autometer gauges after the engine swap...

I have a long range tank from Man-A-Fre, it is nice to have the added range esp when we travel an the family is asleep, I don't stop, we make great time. The down side is the fill up when you are down to a 1/4 tank, but remember the top1/2 cost the same to fill as the botom 1/2.

What year Burban? I might go this route in the 60 and use a factory intank pump if it's from a tbi year truck.

It says for up to 91 so that would include the early TBI trucks....That is my plan...

LMC catalog

the tanks in the catalog are replacement for 40 gal 1973 -1991 suburbans... shows gauge set up and fuel take up with strainer on the online page, 3 and 4 outlets... no pumps in these tanks... here is the url for the page in the catalog for the tanks:

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/csb/0123.html

you might be able to retro fit something tho.

re: that web page

it is a jpg so you can right click it and save it to your hard drive and view it in something where you can use the magnifier with.... all of the number stuff etc. is explained in the front of the catalog though.

I am subscribing to this thread, I would love to find a solution for a longer range fuel tank for my 60, without spending mucho for one of the man a fre/specter units. Please update us with pic's and progress

Nice find Jim....That might work better...I will keep looking and see what my plan is...I will document whatever route I go....I just figure there has to be cheaper than MAF's only option....

jim

jim: can you edit your reply to post the url of that ford tank?

the advantage of having a 40 gallon tank is that to fill it up at $ 3 / gal works out to be $ 120. which by itself makes you think: do i need to take this trip now or can i wrap this errand into another one and save a trip. that will allow us to spend more time on the computer. also, it lets us fill up on tuesdays or wednesdays when the stations drop their prices a few cents instead of friday or saturday when they jack up the price. Or, hold off buying gas until we find a deal. there is one local station that sells premium at regular prices on thursday afternoons... must tell you something... they are selling less gas on thursdays then on fridays.

besides it gives you the option of carrying around that huge full tank of fuel (average gallon of gas weighs in at about 6 to 7 pounds and is approximately equal to the explosive poser of one stick of dynamite)... but then again, it does give your 60 the range of a toyota avalon or a honda accord.

I'd throw $10 bucks someone's way if they want to be the guinea pig. If 15 other people want to do the same we can pay someone's way to figguring this on out.

Anyone volunteer to try it?

Others willing to pitch in?

I would love to find an option that is affordable.

One issue on this one will be the mechanical 60 pump VS the electric in tank 62 pump. Seems like the 60 might be a little easier.

external fuel pump should be easy fix for 62's

external electric fuel pump ought to be a simple add in replacement for the in tank pump... never liked the in tank pumps any way and is one of the reasons i went back to the 60 over the 62 when replacing my 80 that replaced my 62... let’s see, that adds up to about 264. less junk on engine, mechanical rather than electric window regulators, etc.

jim: what do you think?

Duh. I think Gary has an external fuel pump on his 502-62.

OK folks lets get some folks to pony up the bucks. Jim seems like the perfect guinea pig. Might even be a good TT article.
