After doing some serious fact finding about suspensions for my 65 FJ45 I decided on the 2.5 inch OME setup. Almost everyone I spoke with had nothing but positive things to say. The next step was to source the stuff. I had initially thought about the local SoCal cruiser store that stocked the stuff but after a few bad experiences I was a little weary. Since it was reasonably close by and I could drive to pick it all up I decided to give them a shot. So I made a call to see if I could come by and get it all.
They weren't sure if they had it all in stock, so they had to call me back. I never got a call. After calling back again they said they didn't have it all. They weren't really sure what they didn't have in stock...
I figured I'd at least get a few answers to my questions...
"What's the difference between the N42 and the N89 shocks?"
"I've heard the light duty kit is the same as the heavy duty kit with a leaf spring removed from the rear pack, is that true?"
"What size shackles do you guys sell with your kit?"
I had my answer. The next call was to Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters. He answered all my questions and more. He understood what I was looking for and spent time explaining all my options.
He was willing to send a partial kit and if I decided to get the shackles, etc. after the fact he assured me I'd get the package price. I have to say Kurt was a pleasure to deal with (as usual).
The kit arrived on the day he said it would and everything ordered was there, neatly packaged and complete. Once I tore into the project and removed the rear shackles I noticed a slight problem, I had received 4 sets of the SB30 bushings. It turns out they did not fit the rear shackles on my year.
At this point my truck was pulled apart and tomorrow was Saturday. CRAP! An immediate call to Kurt that Friday afternoon and he picked right up. I explained the situation and he wanted to solve the problem right away. These are a little less common than the others and he was pretty sure nobody would be stocking them in CA. I needed 2 sets of the SB79. I also wasn't sure how the rear pins worked and he was happy to explain how they were pressed in. I decided to get a set of greasable pins because I was sure I would have to beat the piss out of them to get them out. "They'll be there Monday first thing."...
When I explained that the truck was half out of the garage with springs removed and I was willing to pay for overnight he didn't hesitate for a second. He offered to send them at his expense. I assured him I was willing to pay for the prompt shipping but he insisted. They arrived at 9am the next morning on Saturday (after a 4pm call the day before).
Kurt's knowledge about the product he sold me, his willingness to go the extra mile and his availability for tech support made me realize that once again it's good to support your MUD vendors!
