I just purchased 5 OEM steel wheels & hubcaps for my 76 FJ40. Unfortunately, they come from Toyota painted black now, not the original grey. I'm not sure if I want to leave them black or paint them the original grey - Anyone have pictures of the stock wheels in black? Or if I decide to go back to the original grey, can I paint them myself? Product suggestions?

Thanks for the help.

I went with the non-usa white color....actually off-white.

used to have 15"

they were black/primer from toyota ....but....started to rust quickly so needed to painted ....went white.

changed over to 16" splits...had grey and went back to white/off white.

lets see a pic of your rig :)

Thanks for the info. Here are a few pics (with old wheels). How many cans of the grey from JTO would I need for 5 wheels? Does this stuff hold up pretty well? I would love to powder coat, but can't swing that right now.

I only have about three quick coats on mine because I was in a rush. I should have waited longer between coats and done a few more coats. If you prime with light gray, then two cans should do it.

I am about to buy a second set of rims from Toyota at $85.89 a piece. Is that a good deal? What did you pay?

I paid $625 for 5 wheels, 5 hubcaps (w/ shipping included from TN to NJ) - bought it from rwtoyota on ebay. I contacted him through ebay and made him an offer. Give it a try and see what he's willing to do for 2 wheels.

That doesn't sound like too bad of a deal, but usually they are the biggest ripoff. They sell FJ40 rear emblems for $40 on eBay that actually list for about $20.

I used ACE RustStop medium gray on mine. Turned out nice and close to the darker later wheels.

I think if I bought new ones I would have to powdercoat. Someone recently had theirs done and it was really nice. Maybe they will chime in with the powdercoat they used.

I painted mine a white (ish) color. I like the look but was thinking I might change to gray . I think they look great black also.

I've seen black OEM wheels on 40's. Somebody posted a blue 1966 FJ40 picture awhile back, can't remember under what thread, but the photo was taken the day he bought it new. Black wheels and all. It didn't even have the manual locking hubs, still had drive flanges on the front.

fj25's had white rims....if the body was white that is :)

as well as red rims/red truck.....green rims/green truck ...ect.

all a matter of preference these days...i think white or black or grey will look good on your rig...i have seen all combinations and all look equally good on the mustard rigs

Powdercoat

I will let you decide if it looks stock, since I have not had it side by side to an OEM color.

I used a ANSI49-grey (used on transformer boxes) which is a Cardinal color P004-GR09.

Just got some prices on powder coating:

1. $85 per wheel for powder coat + $25 for sandblasting (Total = 110 per wheel)

2. $65 - $100 per wheel for both powder coat & blasting (price dependent on condition of wheel)

Are these decent prices?

Thanks,

Way high in my opinion.

Should be around 250 - 300 for a blast and coat for 5 wheels.

I was quoted 45 per wheel for blast and coat. Thats $225.00 total for 5 wheels.

Thats from Salem Powder Coat in Salem OR. (good people)

Like the crazygreek said, seems way high.

I paid $50/wheel which included blast and powder at an industrial outfit. Some of the 'high' end custom shops that do rods and harleys get $100/wheel, but I doubt you need that level of finish on a cruiser. Shop around, I saw a big cost variance from shop to shop.
