Anyone have their FJ80 get stuck in park? I'm sure its the lock is not releasing. the owners manual described how to bypass it using a screw driver and that got me home but now I have to do that every time. anyone have experience with this repair before I start blindly tearing into it?

The switch itself is likely *not* the problem.

More likely you have a fuse or brake light that's out.

Agree with all the above... it is likely a corroded ground in the brake light wiring at the rear bumper... especially if you have added an after market bumper. also check the trailer wiring harness.
How is your cruise control? Often this issue is coincidental with the cruise control not engaging... the master switch will operate, but the set function will not. that is a key indicator that it is a brake light wiring issue.

x4 on a brake light fuse. You can override this saftey feature by sticking a screwdriver down a little hole by the shifter to put it in gear should you want to though.

If it pops again, I recommend you check your wiring IVO the rear bumper.

I'm having this issue off and on with my HDJ81, and the cruise control is behaving exactly as you've stated. Brake lights work just fine, fuse is fine, and brakes/calipers/rotors recently redone and in good condition, no dash lights saying 'heads up'.

I'd really like to fix the cruise control issue as well as shiftlock over-ride issue.

I'm also having this issue on a 92 FJ. Brake lights works, replaced fuses and still not working. It's intermittent too. Cruise control has never worked. I haven't checked wire harness yet but if anyone has other things I should be checking let me know.

I actually was having this same issue and was just able to resolve it yesterday. After using the trailer wiring for the first time some exposed section of wire shorted out and tripped both the turn signal fuse and the brake light fuse. After investigating, I noticed that there were two "extra" wires hooked up to those two fuse ports, presumably from someone running aftermarket trailer wiring. I replaced the fuses, but still no luck.

After investigating further I found that the retainer clip for the fuse leg was stretched out from having held both the fuse AND additional wire clip for who knows how long. I wrapped some electrical tape around a small flathead and "scrunched" the connector back together. Everything now works like a charm! Well...except the trailer wiring...

It happened to my 1997 LX 450 while stopped for gas in Western BC Canada. The first indication was that the cruise control failed to set. The master would light, but the set button did nothing.
Then, when I put it in park to fill up, it would not come out of park.
I found a corroded ground wire at the trailer harness connection.
You may also want to check the wiring from your brake switch under the dash.

ih8mud is incredible. I just got stuck w/the same shifter issue in the driveway this morning and the first thread search offered up (this one) solved it. For me it was the fuse. I used my trailer yesterday and I'll bet the funky wiring on the trailer caused the issue. Thanks all for maintaining this.

I'll second that a thousand times!

Same just happened to me. Jumped in the rig to take a spin and it was stuck in Park. I knew about the override, so used that. Got home, checked MUD first, and the first thread in search shed light on the issue - the brake light fuse! Makes sense in a round about way......

Can't say enough how thankful I've been for this forum over the last years!
