Perfect. Thanks for all the details.
I suspect others have or want to reinstall too. Nice to do it the right way.

Unless something's wrong with the deflector, leave it. It's one less headache to deal with.![]()
Agreed...

Mostly I just like how it looks. My pilot/A&P mechanic buddy also suggested I put it back on. Since I can not get inside the hatch and coat/paint the areas post-welding I felt welding the holes closed was a non-starter (which played heavily into my decision).
I drilled out the nutserts. I used a magnet and shop vac to get all the pieces from inside the hatch. They would have rattled if I skipped this step. I used the hole for the R washer tube to access the inside the hatch for the magnet (see pics).

I used the next size larger nutserts: 6mm. The original ones are 5 mm. You can see the difference in the pic.
I used the diy tool in the pic (a piece of flat bar stock with a drilled hole, some washers, and a M6 bolt/screw) to install the nutserts. You do not need a special pricey tool.
The 6mm nutserts need a 9mm hole. I ground down a drill bit to just the size needed so the holes were just large enough to fit the nutsert ridges. I coated the outside of the nutserts with more Rust Bullet immediately before I installed them, then tightened them down.
Anyone even know what the point of this spoiler was?
It actually does help keep the rear window cleaner.
Where did you get the nutserts? Any hardware store?
western flyer said:I received some PMs about my DIY nutsert installation tool, including a request to send one out.
You can see the nutsert tools I have made in the pics here (the bar stock items). The concept is the tool (the bar stock) does not turn during installation (nor does the nutsert, hopefully), while the cap screw or bolt is tightened, which "mushrooms" the inside portion of the the nutsert, clamping the nutsert to whatever you have inserted it into.
So...the tool (as I make them) is essentially a piece of bar stock with the correct size hole drilled in it, some washers, and the appropriate size cap screw or bolt (and something the turn the screw/bolt). Easy. It takes about 5-10 minutes to make one. My bar stock is aluminum, but you can use steel. I put a bend in them to make it easier to hold it with your hands while the tool face stays flush to the nutsert.
These links should fill in any concept or info gaps. Cheers, J

I'm looking for one of these air deflectors to add to my 80, which never had one. If anyone knows a reputable source, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Local dealership parts counter believes the original supplier for these 80-series deflectors no longer has a relationship with Toyota, or something like that. Just trying to be sure I replicate the ones originally installed.
Just to follow up on the Rust Bullet. You can buy it @ Rust Inhibitor Paint | Stop Rust | Rust Corrosion Inhibitor | Rust Converter. $22 delivered. I just got my second jar. My first jar sealed itself shut!
put a piece of cellophane in, push it all the way to the fluid level. will keep it from going bad as quickly from exposure to the air and keep the lid from sealing shut
as for the nutsert, cut off wheel...cut off the bolt and let the nutsert fall. if you're doing roof nutserts, let them fall into the headliner, just make sure you let it cool down before the last cut so it's not so hot it burns through the headliner when it falls
As you may have picked up in these threads, many guys on here would love to be in your position of not having the port-installed wind deflector. Like the roof racks, the deflectors really can be body rust magnets.......
