Land Cruiser...
because everything else just sucks.

They are my truck of choice when working in Central and South America so when I went looking for a SUV there was only one option. I did test drive other, but in the end my mind kept saying "Its not a Cruiser".

The FJ80 is also a sexy truck that does not show its age. My '97 looks more modern then most '07's but has that nice solid axle up front. :bounce:

20 years ago I built a Tamiya Land Cruiser scale model and the 80 series never got out of my head. When I got older bought a 100 but always lusted after the 80, so 2 years ago I picked one up. It was surreal to finally drive something I only dream about when I was a kid. :bounce:

1. its a land cruiser
2. its bullet proof
3. its a land cruiser
4. my sister swears by hers
5. we have had one off and on for the past 30 years.

This could be REALLY LONG, so I'll try to shorten it up.

Timeline:

In the Car Biz, in 1995 I took in a 1988 Cherokee that had $12K in mods. Wheeled that for about 4 years, it would climb like a goat (lockers, etc) but every time I took it out, something broke. (It's a Jeep Thing ®). But had a blast.

Wanted something else, considered a CJ7, but did some research and found Mark Whatley online, he suggested I look at a 40. Which I did. As soon as I saw those huge axles under there, I knew I'd found my truck.

Bot my first 40 in 1997, (1981 FJ40) wheeled it, had a great time, but it couldn't pass a gas station.

Did more research and realized I needed a diesel. But we all know how that goes.

Found and bot a 1985 BJ70 out of Ontario Canada (in 1998), which I found out later is the Salt Capital of North America. To say that truck was rusty is an understatement. But, it wheeled like the devil.

Bought and sold (and wheeled) a few more 40's and 60's, came across a nice clean BJ42 in 2002, grabbed it and I still have that one.

Then, in 2003, heard about a 1991 80 that had a 1HD-T engine conversion. So I bot that one.

And that was my first foray into the 80 series. It's now my main wheeling truck. Not a rockcrawler, but an excellent expedition vehicle.

It's very reliable, it actually does get respectable fuel mileage, it's a diesel, it's got plenty of room to carry my camping gear, and I can sleep in it. I love this truck, more so than any of my previous cruisers. It's comfortable, it does 80 MPH on the highway, it has A/C and wheels better than the others. What more could I ask for?

1. I drove them in Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa
2. If i hadn't been in one i'd be dead. (see above)
3. They can go anywhere
4. Tons of room for gear
5. I wanted to be able to drive one in the beautiful country of the United States.

1) Solid front and rear axles (like my old SAS Toyota mini-truck)
2) 1 ton fully boxed frame with a full floating rear axle for extreme capacity
3) 1FZ had a lot more power/weight ratio than my old 22RE Toyota SAS mini-truck
4) Drives and rides like a car and is comfortable, but can go almost anywhere my built SAS mini-truck could
5) Toyota over engineering (back when they actually over engineered) and Toyota reliability.

I saw mine sitting on the side of the road with a for sale sign on it....... She was rusty but Ive always wanted a cruiser.

Now Im f*$ked for life.

Watched a Discovery show many years back that had a build up of two 80 series Cruisers for Arctic Exploration. (Black, diesels, 44" tires, winches, armor, crevice crossing stinger, trailers)

Went to a Salvage yard to look for 4Runner parts and seen that the LC's have a Full Floating rear axle and solid front axles.

I missed driving offroad, (A 3/4 ton and 1 ton jeep trucks on jackstands do me no good.)

Wanted something large for kids and able to sleep in comfortably.

Reliable!

I only need one. It's a Land Cruiser. Do I need to say more??

1. My first son.
2. My second son.
3. My third son.
4. My daughter.
5. I love to explore. Hard.

I wanted an expedition vehicle where the family of five can fit for camping and adventure trips.

affordable.

but the most important reason was IH8MUD, this site is top of the line and I have saved tons of $$$ with all the advise found here, thanks guys.

1. I've lusted after the 80 series cruisers ever since I watched my neighbor drive his 80 to work every morning while I waited at the bus stop in Jr. High (circa 1994).

2. The 80 series a sexy, well engineered, and reliable machine.

3. Extremely capable offroad, solid, coil sprung axles, full floating rear. (I had grown tired of my weak sauce IFS chebby)

4. Plenty of room for my family

5. They had finally come down into my price range, so I snatched one up in 2006.

I was going to lease the brand new FJ cruiser or the new Xterra. While checking the adds for a quick return on a new Xterra I saw a LC for $11K. Couldn't believe the price so I did more searching and found this site. It has been a GREAT 4 years and I just paid her off last weekend! and have put 40K miles on her.
OH WHAT A FEELING!

P.S. my gas pedal feels fine! :meh:

Because I was a "Master Mechanic" at the local Jeep dealership.

Jeeps aways screw up the expedition, everyone has a jeep and jeeps ALWAYS break! Jeeps are the best stimulus package there is. Buy a jeep, and since they break every week that's a way to create jobs and keep the economy moving.

Toyota's have seen parts of this planet that jeep have never and will never see.

Tuff and reliable trucks

Japanese.... Meant to last!

Yeah, being on the repair side of the jeep made me buy Toyota
