It's amazing how people obsess about a few hundred bucks a year.

At least this is a Toyota forum. It's really disgusting to see it on the BMW forums.

...they are gona fricking die! If you dont stop me from shooting them, im going to start microwaving those little s***s!

thats why i dont frickin understand these people complaining.

Anyways, its cold out, im going to go easy on the kittens tonight and just let them freeze to death on my roof.

hi, i'm a newbie on the board...thanks a lot for the tons of info from the members of this forum.

after following this thread for a while, i decided to see for myself how i was really doing mileage wise on my newly acquired 100....

2000 TLC
75k miles
bare stock

City driving - i usually average 12-13mpg, 80% local streets 20% freeway in Orange County, CA.

Freeway driving - 17 mpg cruise-controlled at 70mph average.

i just got my highway mileage reading from a trip from OC to Lompoc and back. what a pleasant surprise to hit that much mpg considering that the roads were not that flat (took 101 and the 1). i do follow the "egg between foot and pedal" philosophy of driving.

Saving a few hundred bucks is one thing (salesmen love buyers that can easily be goaded into a sale with the phrase “Oh if you can’t afford it” (pride)

Consider this: A low MPG driver will use 6,000 gallons more gas in the expected life of their TLC 100 than someone with a high average MPG.
Expected life of TLC 250,000 miles.
Low average MPG 11.4 city.
High average MPG 15.63 city.

Just as important as the petroleum savings one can obtain with conservative driving habits in a well maintained TLC, is that a drop in MPG can alert one to a developing mechanical issue.

The low MPG driver is general heavy on the throttle (throttle jockey), that is, driving the TLC like it was a sport car; IMHO this will increase maintenance and reduce vehicle useful life.

That is a good reason to keep track of MPG.

If you do any Overlanding, maintaining a MPG log will greatly assist you with planning fuel stops.

Your MPG city is a little low for "egg between foot and pedal" driving. Has all recommend maintenance been keep up to date?

Hi 2001LC...

yes, so far all maintenance has been covered. only due right now is the 75k scheduled maintenance which i'm planning to do this week.

i was thinking the same that the mileage for city was a bit low for my driving style. but i guess the stop and go (lots of stoplights) affects the mileage performance heavily. i know its not a joke to get an almost 2 MT plus vehicle from 0 to 45 in a manner that the cars behind you don't blow their horns at you for being too slow.

i posted this not to complain about the consumption of the vehicle. i am only really interested in finding out what i should really expect from it performance-wise, and to be able to have a benchmark to look back to, to see if all things are working properly.

thanks for the feedback!

Full syn
87 octane
All MPG GPS
14-15 city
16-17 hwy
1.5 mpg less with 1300lb pop-up or RTT

Performed MPG test on Sat. Filled up drove ~30 miles on Hwy, hit some dirt roads, low range a couple of times, and drove back to the same station and refilled. 87 miles total 15.35 MPG GPS

Winter MPG results:

I baselined my 2001 LC last fall at ~100,000 miles.
My winter MPG drop a bit to 15.12  from 15.67 and 15.35 in the previous winters.

Could it be:

The new tires? Increased by 2psi all around to compensate.
Switching all lubs from Castrol syn. to Mobil 1 syn.? Probably not.
Over tightening wheel bearings? I don't think so.
Didn't change O2 or mass air sensors? Maybe they're getting weak.
Could it be that Phillips 66 changed its winter gas blend or used a lower OCTANE than stated? Phillips 66 wouldn't do that just to make and extra buck, would they?:hhmm:

I'll see if my multi year summer average holds at 16.725mpg.

I don't care so much about the MPG from a cost savings perspective, but I do find the min/max aspect fascinating from a technical perspective.

I also enjoy listening to people crow about how they took a bath on their previous "gas hog" to get a small SUV or a luxury car and how they're saving so much in gas, until I tell them what I'm getting in my LC and they realize that the difference in most cases is trivial (primarily because they drive petal-to-the-metal all the time).

I'm maintaining my driving habits from my FJ-62 and am almost half-way through my first tank of gas, so I'm very curious to see how the MPG compares. The big difference between the 100 and the FJ-62 so far seems to be that in the 100 I can get lower MPG by pushing on the gas pedal harder, where I didn't have that luxury with the 3FE, especially in the mountains where you just took what it gave you.
