Ok sense we’re throwing out opinions, I think most of the guy on mud are not wheeling the 80s much less rock crawling them.
I think for the most part there daily drivers built up as off roaders. JMHO
Mine I don’t even drive to the trail it a trailer Queen And I push it to the limit ;)

An 80 series with a v8 is a lot of fun in my opinion. If you gave me a choice between a new 911, a Ferrari, or a well dialed in v8 swapped 80, I would take the 80. I've been trying to get mine to that point but keep it a daily driver. I'm not going to go as far as a TLC build. I don't need all brand new cad plated bolts or a powdercoated frame personally.

I’ll own it - my black 80 has very little wheeling as I had the LX450 I beat like a rented mule, and the sage 40th AE was bone stock buying & almost stock selling ( @RavenTai temp guage mod, updated fusible links - little crap).

Now with the Tundra I drive it daily & if crashed - I can find another real easily, plus it tows & esp brakes way better than the 80 when I have the boat behind me.
Plus the Tundra camera shows you get door-jacked about 25% the time you park at the grocery store, etc.

-And while I like wheeling, my spine barks after a great day on the trails, so I fish more now as I been in the 80 over 2 decades.

I run it regularly, but I’m aging & sadly my KBB isn’t going up like the 80 ;)

But that doesn’t mean I have any desire to sell it.

Linus, I'm not being judgmental just a observation. I think everyone should use there Reg as they see fit.
I have come to like them so much I wish I had a bone stock one just to DD and enjoy.
I do have a bone stock 2006 Tundra access cab 4x4 TRD ( low mi. 115k) that seem to be going up a brisk rate. But it's not a 80 🤷‍♂️

Cheers

Oh, frankly I agree w/ you - the funny thing now is us who came over here when Spectre had enough of us, that means we the oldest here are aging & time is rougher on us than our 80’s.

I was backing your observation & under no delusion I’m going to Moab next week, or some similar scenario.

I gotta say that until I get a G2 Sequoia trans case in the Tundra, the 80 is still the best when the freeze hits/snow on roads, that alone pays for itself in my driveway ;)

But yes, I agree - I’d say ~3dzn guys really constantly get out in rock gardens & the rest of us mainly cruise DNR roads / backcountry trails or whatever, and sadly up here that’s around 3-4mo when rail doesn’t wash out sections / create 100’ stretches of bog/standing water on the DNR / backcountry trails

ITT: "Hey that guy has the same vehicle as me and doesn't use it for exactly the same thing as me! What a tragedy!"

The 80 is truly amazing. I was just marveling at that fact while looking at the engine bay earlier today. BUT it's also a mass produced, regular Toyota. It doesn't even stand out in it's stock form at all. It doesn't look special at all. People think it's a 4runner all the time. What are you guys comparing to low productions volume super cars for?

No one else who owns one owes you jack for how they decide to use it. You don't get to sit on a high horse because you used yours to drive over bigger rocks. Who cares? No one.

So by G2 Sequoia transfer case you mean open center diff full time 4wd like a 100 series? and the working viscous-coupled awd in an 80 series is pretty good in snow because you get power to front and rear axles but with controlled slip so no stopping to lock the center diff once you start losing traction?

So how big of tires can I fit with a 2.5” lift?
I'm running 39s on a 2.5 lift in the front, 2" lift in the back, but I think I'm the exception :p

And I Don't care if no one cares. And to be clear like I said before every one should use there Reg like they see fit ;)

Wheel on folks

The dream would be just have a fleet of them for every use possible. That's less possible now than it has ever been. Kicking myself just like so many on here...the amount of solid $5k trucks I passed on over the years is a true travesty.

The G2 (some) have a TC that exactly mimics the late FZJ80 so I have full-time AWD & can also lock the case. I also plan a Harrop in the RR axle, but for algae in boat launches & informal sandy banks we dump boats in / retrieve - retrieve in sand alot of times means the winch on a tree too, but yes, w/o a FR locker it’s possible to Toyota-Lego a 80 function CDL & pin 7 mod drivetrain into a otherwise ‘1 tire fire‘ 4WD Tundra.

Other guys toss superchargers on the 3UR, I just want the N/A power & a 80 powertrain/selectability. (Plus, 3UR rods are tiny compared to 1FZ ones)

Just being able to lock the case in Hi w/ open diffs would be a huge improve to the Tundra in snow here. Or the same for the concrete slabs/gaps where algae rides to the top on high tide & alot of guys with 1/2T conventional 4WD (domestics mainly) - pull 1 tire fire trying to get our sized boats out of the salt.

Anybody else watch those two dudes bidding up to $185k (that's $185,000 dollars) on a 1995 Land Cruiser?

And it ends up Reserve not Met at $185k. Absolutely amazing vehicle, but that's just an amount I can't really wrap my head around.

Nice job on one of your first posts…😳
what a response

(no one even said “this isn’t tech” yet 😆)

I watched Ward's video of the Joe Rogan 80. He mentions that approximately 3,000 hours of labor went into building it. Someone said that TLC charges $300/hour for their work. Go ahead, do the math!

Perhaps to rephrase, "where is the tech for us common folks?"

Thanks for sharing. That’s pretty cool
We prob should keep the Rogan truck talk tame.

Brian had to ‘cleanup’ the last time opinions got out of hand ;)
