I've moved past beating up my stuff and simply enjoy owning a small collection of excellent examples. Mudders who see my rigs generally don't have a problem with it. Or at least they don't ask me passive-aggressive questions, then walk away.![]()

At the end of the day the market is just supply/demand.

BMW E30 M3 is a fine exampleYea I mean do what you want with your vehicles, but I get where you're coming from.
Even so, Land Cruisers in the US were kind of a status symbol from when they were new, being offered only in top trim at luxury SUV prices, unlike other regions where they're sold mainly as work trucks and utility vehicles. Seems like for the most they only started getting wheeled heavily when the values started to tank in the mid-2000s.
Now that values are up again, they're starting to become status symbols again, and/or collector's items to be speculated on. I agree it can be kind of a shame when a 3x locked 80 becomes a showpiece or heirloom sitting in a garage and taken for Sunday drives, but then how many supercars end up with the same fate instead of getting tracked like they were designed for?

I recently bought a cream puff and was going to sell my ‘94 and diesel swap the LX. When I got it, I just couldn’t bring myself to chop up such a pristine rig. So I’ll sell it. I doubt whoever buys it will be wheeling it, but if it’s not mine, it’s not really my business. I think a lot of people wouldn’t even consider what I do wheeling. I just use it for camping and getting off the beaten path away from other people.

Idk, it looks good. But I’ll never be able to get past the BMW power plant. The ZF auto… all day long. But anything BMW is hit and miss, on my experience. Your anecdote is very insightful. suppose that's the inevitable result of the dominant culture we have. Exacerbated in the last few years by social media, insinuating if you don't have all the latest junk, your not worthy. I spend a lot of time wondering if any of this will come to a head. Probably not. Just generations of people being told they should spend their money on material things for their image, and make a point to show it off to everyone else, only to discover they don't really have much of personality. I doubt that's anything new though.Old fart here.
All this bring memories of being in a cocktail party were a guy was showing off a (very expensive) watch that could work under a pressure equivalent to 200 meters underwater- or whatever-and was probably inspired by Jacques Cousteau, a team of Navy Seals and James Bond.
We had a rather brief exchange:

Let’s face it folks. Since the explosion of the “overlanding” fad, any cool-looking guy must have a rig with 37’s mud tires, 5’ lifts, winch, bumpers, lights, RTT, and all expensive sh**...for these adventurous trips to...you know...the grocery store?
Make no mistake: anyone is free to use their money as they see fit. Period. However, we need to be aware that what used to be a hobby for a few enthusiasts has evolve to something else. Looks like our hobby/passion will certainly be more expensive for the foreseeable future.

It's crazy how they were being given away just a few years ago. Nowadays your only options for 5k and under are Xterras, Monteros, Troopers, Cherokees, maybe a beat up 4runner or Tacoma, or an old ranger if you're brave.WOW Opinions on opinions! Here is my OPINION
These trucks were fluffed up hard core trucks when they were new. But very few if any original buyers purchased them to take them out on the trails and thrash them, partially because they were hideously expensive. They became popular in the off road world here in the states when the original owners started trading them in for a newer version because you must look good dropping the kids off at school.
The prices kept dropping to the point where guys like me were picking them up for under $2k still running. So we added some big tires a lift , sliders and bumpers and took what is regarded as one of the best off road suspensions on the planet off a factory floor and went out to push them and ourselves to the limit. An entire support system grew in the aftermarket to support these trucks and we were all there standing at the alter of the mighty 80 series.
But here is the rub, those kids that were being dropped off and their buddies that saw them dropped off are now fueling the current market for these trucks. Because all of us cheap old bastards that picked them up for a song don't like it, fuels their fire even more.
Do not feel so bad though, the cars old farts like me revere are 65 Rivs, 66-67 Chevelles and 66-67 GTOs etc. Just a POS shell for any of them will run you over $10K.
What the true whining here is about is "I can't buy a world class 4X4 for pennies on the dollar any more"
