I'll start with no one was injured.

Was finally getting around to opening up the rear wheel opening. Cut it, bent over the outer skin and started welding it back together. I don't know if I broke through, or just got part of it too hot, but I was finishing one weld and I heard a crackling sound. I looked up to see flames on the other side of the rear window. I ran to the garage for a fire extinguisher, and thought better of it and yelled at the wife in the house "Turn on the hose, the Lexus is on fire". By the time I got to the hose it was on, and the truck was ablaze. My mind flashed back and forth between the instinct to get the fire out and the fear of the whole thing blowing up. The black smoke was just billowing out of the truck.

I got the flames out, or so I though, and dropped to my knees to take in some water from the hose. One of the neighbors yelled "It's flaming up again!". I got the flames down again, and opened the hatch. There was some stuff in the back of the truck, a lawn chair, a roll of blue towels, a carbord box, my sons' life jacket and a CO2 life jacket. The 3rd row seats had fallen down and the stuff under them was still burning, so I started pulling stuff out to get the rest of the flames down. 5-10 min later the fire trucks showed up. On there advice I pulled the seats cause they were still smoldering.

The RR seat is down to the metal. Both child seats are melted. The rear cargo panels, melted, same with rear hatch panel. 3rd row seats, toasted. Back of front head reasts - melted. rear door panels, melted to a degree. Headliner - completely burned - visors singed. PS rear window the divider thing is melted. RR window, shattered (guessing from going hot to cold w/ water). Guage cluster, smoked. GPS, smoked.

The not so funny funny thing is my last payment is on Sept. 1st. I was kidding my wife that now that it's paid off something major would go wrong, I didn't realize that I was going to be that something. Also got a notice that afternoon from my insurance company that my car premiums were goind down another 10 bucks a month.

Of course called the insurance company right away on Saturday. They said it would be auto not homeowners (I didn't know). Adjuster finally called me today (don't work weekends, which sucks if you're out a car). They're going to look at it tomorrow. I was honest and told her I was welding on the wheel well (like I could hide it?). She said it'll be under my comprehessive policy, $250 deductable, and would likely be totaled (no doubt). I have no idea what they'll come up with when they look at it. I don't think they compensate for sliders, bumpers, lift, ect. I just hope they don't nail me too bad for the two dents in the doors, and rear quarters.

I really was getting to the point it was all set up the way that I wanted it. After the fender wells, it was just a matter of a bunch of little stuff, and some body work, and gears.... Ok, so the gears was still a pretty big one...

Private Party Retail Trade In
Retail Excellent Good Fair Excellent Good Fair
KBB $9490 $7265 $6450 $5590 $5325 $4800 $3925

NADA $10175 $7625 $6075 $4250

Edmunds $7857 $6290 $5349

So I'm thinking based on that, I could just put $1000 - $7000 on a dart board, blinfold myself, spin three times and shoot. I just really am getting worked up about not knowing what they'll come up with.

Wow, that really sucks. Sorry to hear it, glad you kept the damage to the truck.

I assume you should be able to keep your mods if they assign no value in the totaling, so I'd go in the door with that position if you are going to build another one.

:frown:

Why does this sh$t happen with one payment left. Had an accord that was stolen on my birthday. Yep, one payment left.

Sorry to hear about the rig.

Good Luck,

Buck

 Sorry to hear that :(, hope it all turns out well for you. Keep us posted.

previous insurance experience

Not sure which insurance company you have. I have State Farm and w/ my previous vehicle a 99' Chevy Pickup i was t-boned and they paid for any aftermarket part that was bolted onto the truck. They told me (because i asked before building my 80) that anytime there is an insurance claim on a vehicle whether it is totalled or damages fixed any and all after market parts would be replaced or reimbursed w/ the claim.
So in other words, you will receive your vehicle back from the shop exactly the way it was before the claim. And if it is totalled you will be reimbursed for any and all modifications regardless of what they are.

Sorry to hear about your rig, the scariest thing about having an 80 is losing her.

if it still runs, buy it back and bust out the sawz-all. sounds like a good start to a radical trail buggy.

Totally horrible....

Man.....

The flow of bad luck of recently has been very disproportionate to good news....

:(

I'm sorry to hear about that. I would bet that you will be able to make out well on the value of the rig...I mean it IS a Lexus after all!

Where's all the pictures?????????

I had this happen on another vehicle i owned. My insurance comapny paid me avererage reatail + mods with receipts or some sort of proof of value + sales tax. Good Luck!!

Man, that is really terrible. I feel for you, having just gone through the insurance wringer with my totalled rig a few months ago. My advice would be to gather any receipts that you have for modifications and absolutely submit those to the insurance company. They should consider the value of the truck plus mods for reimburesent, then give you the option to buy it back for a salvage value based on the blue-book numbers.

Hard to say without pics, but if the fire was contained to the back, buy it back, clean it up, and wheel it. Just consider it a little more white trash. :hillbilly:

Sucks that it happened, but a good lesson to those of us who weld on our vehicles. Make sure you know what is next to, above, and (especially) behind what you are welding on. And maybe keep a fire extinguisher on hand. A big one.

Bummin deal!:frown:

Tough lesson! In my miss spent youth, I worked for an auto recycle yard, so have burned a few.:o Never weld on a rig without having fire fighting equipment ready! At least a couple of 5gal buckets of water and the hose ready to go. The sound deadening and insulating stuff burns well and if the heat source (hot metal) is still there, will relight, so always cool the metal, then fight the rest of the fire.

It's probably totaled, the insurance co will likely give a good deal to buy it back. Find another, transfer your parts and sell the extras?

I have no idea what they'll come up with when they look at it. I don't think they compensate for sliders, bumpers, lift, ect. I just hope they don't nail me too bad for the two dents in the doors, and rear quarters.

My 1991 FJ80 was totaled resulting from an impact to the rear axle. The other driver's insurance paid for the cost of replacement.

Here is the list of features:

- Miles: 241,000
- Paint: horribly oxidized on hood and top
- Body: front end impact (minor) from PO, hardly noticeable
- Interior: cloth, usual wear and tear, fairly decent overall
- 2.5" OME lift
- Custom sliders
- Custom front bumper
- Custom rear bumper

I was first given a quotation of $4500.00. I contested their offer over the phone by stating that "vehicles similarly equipped within a 200-mile radius of my zip code are worth up to $7900.00 (Autotrader, Cars.com, etc.).

The agent said that they had not taken after market modifications into consideration, but that they would, since this largely affects the value of the vehicle in question. While on the phone with her, I emailed her a link to the various ads. Within five minutes, here is what she came up with:

$5900.00 AFTER the $500 to buy back my '91.

So then, make sure that you gather as much information as you can from various classified ads similar to your modded LX.

I certainly hope this helps, very sorry to know this happened.

Wow. That sucks. I have enjoyed your threads on all the different mods you have made. Hopefully everything gets worked out in the end. I am glad that no one was hurt in this. Vehicles can be replaced, people can't.

Jon

Thanks guys...

The formating on the book prices sucks. Pretty much the lowest trade value fair condition about 4k, retail 5-10K.

How do you put a value on the custom rear bumper and sliders that are owner fabed though? Even the Frankie's Off-Road bumper is worth 4 times what I paid for it.

I told my son Elliot that daddy's truck might have to go away.

"Why"

"Cause it got hurt."

"You can fix it daddy. Put a big bad-aide on it"

Anyway, buying it back is a given. The truck still runs, even the blinkers still work - thankfully they go down the other side. But then what?

1/2 tempted to say screw it, this is too much work, and get a lease on a beige Honda Accord....

Also 1/2 tempted to just rip everything out that is burnt, bendliner the whole interior, put a new rear seat and seat belts in and call it good.

Might see it up for sale once the insurance stuff is figured out. I could part it out, but who wants an engine with 208K on it? The axles are definately worth something with the lockers, as are the sliders and bumpers. I've done a part out before though, and it's a pain in the butt and I got no time. So if I sell it, it'll likely be "Here's a trail truck w/ 37's and lockers." and sell it complete. Someone who doesn't need a good interior for little ones I'm sure would love it, or would at least love to chop the top off and cage it! I'd consider it myself, but then I would likely need a 1 ton tow rig, and that's not in the budget.

Thought about just replacing it with another 80, or maybe a 60 series, or god forbid a Ram Charger.... half tempted to get out of the whole fuel injected electronic mess and make life easier. A 60 would be so much easier to replace an engine on than the 80. 62 would be inbetween.

Oh well, we'll see what they say tomorrow.

good lord this blows. Land Cruisers have become that shared experience that me and my son enjoy. I can't imagine buying a Honda afterwards.

My son rolled his 91 and the insurance company just gave it to us. We then sold it to cruiserpart.net after pulling the lift and aussie out of it for some cash.

Granted it was an older vehicle but wait and see how it unflods.

1) Gotta post pics

2) Be glad your house (and your Wife) didn't go with it.

This.

Bed lining it isn't that hard. Did it in my truck. And it actually looks good.

After the bed liner:

(No comments on the boot! It was just to keep it from digging into the still soft bedliner, and is gone now. :hillbilly: )

Wash everything down with TSP to clean it. Spray Second Skin Spectrum for sound deadening (unless you don't care how loud it is, it'll be much louder without carpet). Spray over that with the bed liner of your choice (I used Duplicolor, only took 2 rattle cans to do up to where the second row sits).

A day or two worth of work, depending on how fast you move and how pretty you make it. New panels from a parted out truck to complete the look. Heck, if you did that I bet it'd cover 90%+ of the damage. Some new seats and you'd be good to go....

Guess it can't hurt to have them on the net now, it's not like it's going to be any different when the insurance company gets there tomorrow!
