454 is so cute, you can just pinch them on their cute little manifolds ... my 433 is a destroked 454. LS is is a fantastic motor where it fits. Putting a LS3 in a 54 Chevy pickup right now - totally at my recommendation. I think they're great when you don't want to admit that your engine compartment is, well, small. Have a 6.0 LS in my 64 Buick wagon (only because my twin turbo 455 Buick will not fit). But that brings me to what I don't get - say anything that has a hint of negativity about the LS and suddenly the beehive falls and you have lots of annoyed buzzing. And beehive is a fun pun because... .let's say the two most favorite words for LS owners.... valve springs and lifters.... (can you hear the increased noise?)

The $500 LS with the $200 VSS removal, with the $400 accessory bracket kit, with the full rebuild because at 200k the center cam journals are no longer round, BUT IT WAS $500!!!!! and they'll fight anyone who suggests that, perhaps, the answer was 'not quite'. I cheaped out on my 6.0 LS motor by not boring or replacing pistons (and it had oblong cam journals) - $2500 to install it. The motor was 'free' - using their same calculation because I bought a 2002 Denali and parted it out - so the motor was free, right?

521 cubic inches. With the 4 1/2 bore spacing of the LS, it's theoretically possible but you haven't lived until you've seen a block flex - and flex it will with the torque such monsters make.
Continuing the de-rail and on the topic of BBC's.....I have a mildly built/stroked GenVI vortec 454 in my OBS 2000 CCSB Sierra. I put a Lunati tow cam, eagle stroker crank & rods, and custom RaceTec pistons in it as a result of a blown head gasket and subsequent tear down to repair and not being able to leave well enough alone. It is an absolute TURD compared to my stock Vortec 8.1/allison 2002 2500hd CCLB. Do you have any experience with the GenVI 454 engines? Are the vortec heads total garbage? I expected to smoke the tires off the truck (stock size tires). It wont even chirp them. It was a total waste of about $6k in hard parts and labor....maybe not total waste, because I had to do something, but the extra costs and fuss ended in total disappointment.

very little of what I use is stock - also it's all Gen IV stuff (and that is only the 4 bolt block) Callies crank, Carillo rods, JE forged pistons, Striker heads, Manley titanium valves, Comp cams springs, Comp Cam solid roller billet cam, comp cam roller lifters, comp cam stainless full roller rockers, FiTech intake - all are aftermarket. To be honest, I always though the stock bbc was a dog - I had a 396 in a 67 Camaro, drove a stock 454 73 Corvette, and several trucks. The best 'stockish' is what Hot Rod did with the ARP heads, cam, intake (for budget stuff). Which is a long way of answering, I've never played with the Gen V/VI stuff other then own a couple stockers (and one may be coming into my world soon again - and it will get fixed with an 8.1 and allison)...

and since you mentioned head gaskets - the Corvette motor has MLS head gaskets... spend a lot the first time, or spend a lot over time replacing...

I considered this, or a cummins swap. Either would have been a better choice for the money spent. Good luck with all your projects. The 8.1/allison is a fantastic combo. I love everything about my 2500hd, except for how quiet it is! There is just something about driving a grumbly loud diesel engine pickup that makes life better in the moment.

there's a guy near who did the cummins swap in his square body Suburban. Slow and loud would be my take on all of it - it's a neat truck but he didn't own in long after he 'finished' it and I know of at least 3 other owners at this point (in 4 years). Also, he drove it to SEMA from near me, I beat him by a day for that 1000 mile trip... sure, I wasn't driving slow, but his top speed was 60 mph. I'd love to play with a 6L80 behind a Cummins powered but a 3 speed? solid no for me (and this coming from someone who loves Detroit diesels) because the Cummins just doesn't have the rpm range to be happy with a 3 speed (my opinion).
