Where have you purchased your Exide Orbital 34XCD Battery? When? And lastly, how much did you pay? I can only find it online at http://www.remybattery.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=34XCD but I can't do very thorough research from this computer. NAPA doesn’t carry it, at least here in Boise. Exide's site doesn't show any distributors in Idaho at all.

I came back from a 3-day hike with my nine-year old on Sunday evening to find the battery dead in our 80. There were only 3 other cars at the trailhead, no one in sight, late Sunday afternoon, probably no one happening along again until Monday morning. I was able to wriggle my hand up under the hood of an early 90's Ford pickup, pop the hood and then "borrow" his battery for a jump start, but I need to replace the battery in the 80 as I have no idea why it was dead. It seems to work fine now. The current battery is Lead-acid and has made a mess of the bracket and tray. I want a replacement that's not going to spill acid all over. I've read that the 34xcd is the way to go, but want to do some shopping around before I drop $200 for a battery. It seems a lot of you have gotten Orbital's for around half that…maybe I don't need the 'extreme'? Should I be looking for another model, like the 'select'? I don't have any big accessories, but hope to have a winch soon, one reason I'd like to get the xcd.

Thanks in advance for any replies, unless of course it's a reply like 'use the search function'

Wow, thanks for the overwhelming response!?!

I guess I'll just get the NAPA Orbital 78dt for $145. It looks as good as the 34xcd, just no deep cycle feature.

I think walmart carries them at some stores. they used to be about 125 from there, but as all orbitals have gone up in price, so have they.

Battery

After reading thread after thread on batteries and reading all the specs, I decided just go to the local Toyota dealership. A 27F Toyota TreuStart battery (the cold weather option in the LC) costs $91.30. It has 710 CCA and a 165 minute reserve. The CCA is less than the 900 CCA of an Optima D31A, but the reserve is 10 minutes longer and it costs less than half as much. It has a 7 year prorated warranty and a 2 year free replacement. There is also some kind of towing and installation warranty, although I suspect there are too many restriction on this to be of much value.

I've been coveting the Optimas, but given the specs and warranty compared to the price, the OEM battery came out the winner for me.

Try 4WheelParts...I think they have free delivery. Also, I think they rebadge them (Pro-Comp). If you find them cheaper, they will more than likely price match.

Awesome, thank you! That's $65.00 cheaper than REMY and $20.00 cheaper than the NAPA 78DT, and only $30.00 more than the Toyota model MTJohn mentioned.

Thanks again,

Dan

You could also check the yellow pages for an exide distributor in your area. you could probably pick up a 2nd or blem for about 60% or less of new price.

I went with one of these:

Orbital 78DT

I had a hard time finding one locally (3 months ago) and got impatient so I just ordered it off ebay from Bargain Brothers.

I think their "specs" listed in the auction are incorrect (or were). I made mention of that but I don't think they've bothered to update the description.

Several of the Rising Sun club members run these Orbitals and have had good experiences with them. I went this over an Optima because I've had lousy experience with the Optima red tops

You can also check around with local RV stores. Quite a few stock those orbitals.

I bought a 34xcd, directly from the local Exide battery distibution warehouse. It was ~$120 about 3 years ago. I think I have seen the same battery, relabeled as a "nascar" battery at Schucks.

I just bought the 4wheelparts, ProComp labeled version. There are no exide distributors in Idaho. NAPA was the closest thing I could find but as I wrote before, they don't carry the 34xcd, just the 78DT. I will check out Scmuck's "neckcar" labeled one next time I'm in there.

Thanks,

Dan

I checked with my local Schuck's, even though I already order from 4wpw, they didn't have it in stock, but it did come up in the computer...$246.99! The parts-guy did say if I brought in a print-out of the 4wpw price, they would match it minus 5%. He'd have to order straight from Exide as for some reason this region doesn't stock that battery...good to know.

They used to have them at the MH Schmuck's. You have to be careful on the 4wheel parts deal for price comparison. If it doesn't say Exide some of the sales guys at Schmuck's won't give it to you. I'd go back to the same sales person with the ad.

PM me about some wheeling stuff.
