Soap box... but park rangers are becoming more and more napoleon complex A-holes! I'm finding it more and more. They have the rudest attitudes for the most part. There are a few that are the acceptation but it feels rare. I think they completely forget that they work for us as tax payers and they work on our land.
yeaaaah buddy, this snow has me eyeballing the hills again. weird i haven't seen your 80 around town, i see the white stock 80 and a 100 series but no built 80's around.

It's sad but this has been my experience as well. Canyonlands is the worst. I've learned to avoid contact with the people in green as much as possible. Unfortunately you usually have to make contact if you want to visit the backcountry legally.
One shining example that there are exceptions was our recent experience at Hovenweep National Monument. When I asked the ranger lady about camping in the area she asked me if I owned the 4wd in the parking lot. When I told her I did she winked at me, pulled out the topo, and pointed out a spot on BLM that turned out to be just gorgeous, on the edge of a small cliff, hiking distance of a couple of ruins.
Another great experience I've had is with the Jenny Lake Climbing Rangers at Teton. Friendly, helpful, and super knowledgable.
Did an 1800 mile tour up the Blue Ridge to Washington D.C., circling back for a few days on the North Core Banks for our Spring Break this year.
Taking the Ferry over from Atlantic, NC:
Drove the beach to the northern end of the island in search of Portsmouth Island village.
Tidal flats "road" to the village. My daughter wasn't enthusiastic about driving this at first.
Found a nice spot on a wide open beach to camp for the night.
My childhood vacations were all exploring the country one highway and campsite at a time. So glad I get the chance to do the same for my daughter. Mission to instill a sense of wanderlust successful!
Didn't even know this thread existed - good one! Been busy recently. Spent a lot of time at the coast, Tillamook State Forest not real long ago, and just recently did a kind of round-about WABDR trip. Here are a few recent pics.
Just some mild trails and dirt roads around the Kenai peninsula, Chugach mountains and turnagain arm.
Lots of camping planned this summer down towards Seward.
The plan is a winch, 33s , roof basket an a snorkel eventually and then more serious trails will happen. Over this next year or so though, it's the wife's DD in Los Anchorage.
