Any 1 here rolling a diesel in there cruiser how do you like it overall for wheeling , daily driver, etc? Would you prefer a v8 to wheel with? I am considering one in a fj40 rockcrawler

hummm, my unbiased opinion?
a V8 is great for mud and laying a patch.
the diesel is fuel injected so you have no side hill, verticle or descent concerns and you have great torque down low where you need it and on top of that you have fuel efficency that is unheard of in a gasser V8.
okay, i am a bit biased.
sorry

I'm with wayne, diesel is the only way to go, you wont regret it.

You have so much torque avaliable straight off idle, makes for very easy driving.

My friend went from a Samuri to a much heavier BJ74, he was skeptic of how it performs off road since he plays often.

First little run with open diffs made him a believer, no longer was he working the clutch and throttle like he use to, now he feathers the throttle and moves forward.

For him his love of the truck has grown daily and I know he is one of the most excited first time cruiser owners I have ever met.

Now all we have to do is get some armour on that baby, both front fenders are tweaked already......

I took mine into some large sand dunes yesterday(forgot the camera:mad:) and it performed well.
Many told me the 1HZ diesel doesnt perform well in soft sand but that is BS.
Just a touch of the throttle sent it forward through the softest sand and it also climbed large dunes from a standing start.

As Rob mentioned the increased torque at low rpms leads to less clutch work.
A couple of hours of hard wheeling and a 160 mile drive cost me 2/3 the fuel I would have used with the old 3F.
Ok the NA 1HZ doesnt overtake well at 120 kph but it does the job.

You did post this on a diesel thread, so most of us are very bias, depending on the motor some of them are loud due to timing gears. Diesel does smell but only when you are outside around it while its running. You don't have nearly the power of a V8, but that said, a diesel is way better on fuel will out last a V8 prolly 3 times over (depending on motor) They are in line motors so right from the get go there a better design. As said before drivable touque, the pimp factor that you have a diesel in your LC, turbo's are nice on diesels.

And of cousre you have the ability to run Waste vegatable oil (WVO) or Black diesel (which is filitered used motor oil) or even bio diesel, and it isn't a rediculous amout mods at all.

I dunno, I don't even think it is a land cruiser without a diesel, LOL

depends on which diesel....

Where you live...

how you wheel...

Confused that your asking about overall wheeling and daily driver but you want it for a rockcrawler....

etc..

Yes I love mine. It's slow. I also love my TDI but it's a completely different vehicle. Same with a 3b vs a 4bt or an hz vs a 6bt or a 6.2 etc A v8 can give you hp and torqe and they are fuel injected as well.

Unless the diesel owner is burning veggie and your fellow wheelers are whafting the smell of french fries under thier noses.........

I wheeled with the 74, no problem being behind him at all, clean burning little rig.

Dude .. I have 2 diesel Toys .. when I started with HJ-60 as my DD I'm so happy for a lots of years ( 5 ) 31" to 33" long trips are awesome .. and with proper gearing have good power for mud wheeling ( I can talk about seriur rock crawling )

So roght now I have a very capable rig .. I go all places with the big blocks V8 engines and biggers tires, the diference I have no carburator or electrical ( gremblins ) issues at any time ..

With diesel engine you have a reliable rig ..

If your plan is make a hard core rocke crawler .. you better option is a diesel with double t-case, trusme .. run a diesel and you never go back.

if you ever run your engine up near redline for more than a second or two... you won't like diesel.

if you find yourself stalling a gasser now and then, a diesel motor will largely solve that problem.

If you prefer long-range vs. passing people at highway speeds, diesel is better.

If you spend a lot of time in wet situations, diesel is less failure prone due to splashing.

Diesels are completely inappropriate for wheeling

If I may add one thing to diesel performance in my limited experience off road that has not been mentioned: overall speed control at throttle, not only laying off the clutch and having great torque from the get go, but also laying off the clutch while descending and having great speed control from the high compression engine. My FJ60 used to run away from me on some descents, necessitating the brakes which we all know is baaaaaaaaaaaaaddddd. This is almost never a problem with the BJ42.

uh.. that's an issue for me wheeling:eek: Diesels don't have as good of compression braking due to a throttle plate. I have to ride the brake on some decents with mine or the rpms climb right up and I pick up speed in a hurry. It's really the only aspect I hate with the diesel. That's why rigs need a jake brake..

Then youve never seen or smelt a well tuned modern diesel like a 1HZ:D.
I get a puff of greyish smoke on a cold start and thats all,no smell no black smoke.

The newer style diesels like Toyota make were designed to win people over by their clean manners:D
They could never get soccer mums in oz to drive a 100 series with black smoke pouring out the back;)

Seriously I've never seen a puff of smoke other then at start up out of my 3b, I think it is mostly people's rigs just need a tune up, most excessive smoking is caused by old injectors.

There's more smoke from my pipe tobacco than my 3B...

Most of the hard core wheelers in my club look like funny cars. My BJ42 can't compete with 'em. However, among the stock rigs, my truck will outperform anybody. And since I drive it to and from the event, I don't have to mess with trailers and tow rigs.
;-)
Happy Trails! N

P.S. I'm another satisfied owner because of Radd Cruisers. I drove my rig about 3,000 miles home after importing it through Bellingham.
Fun time.

I didn't mean for my post to be only Pro-Diesel. In reality, I would prefer a V8 if I were planning to drive from crowded city streets, along a long freeway, then hit a muddy wheeling area where I needed lots of tire spinning at high revolutions.
I would probably also prefer a V8 if I was playing on sand all the time.

That doesn't describe my daily driving nor my wheeling.... I live 20 minutes from the nearest gas station- so the economy and range of the diesel is a big deal to me. I also feel a hundred times more comfortable with 2 20liter jerry cans sitting in the driveway than I would be if they were fuel of gasoline... just so much less dangerous.

I'm also in a place where to drive over 100kph (about 60mph) is borderline suicidal and definately a great way to get ticketed. So the 2H's lack of HP doesn't bother me. If I were merging into California freeway traffic every day, I might feel differently. Or I would at least get a much larger rear bumper :)

Diesel isn't really for everyone, but it is so much better than gasoline in some situations, that the folks who drive diesels tend to be fanatic about it.

And the chance to run veggie oil is just plain cool. I love that my exhaust has a distinct food-like smell. I just need to get the heater and filter installed so I can switch over to 100% voil instead of just running 20% or so.
