I keep an Excel spreadsheet of all the parts I've added/replaced to keep my 300k-mile 100 top notch. Foolheartedly, I also entered the "cost" of each item...

I added it up and as of this morning I've spent $8,966.72 to keep my 100 as close to 'new' as possible while modestly improving functionality. That's just parts costs, I do my own work. This is over two years of ownership and I'm planning on driving it forever. No regrets.

Interesting notes:

- The most expensive items are also the most useful: Gamiviti rack, Land Shark drawers, BFG KO2's, and modern stereo/amp.

- Next expensive are big-ticket wear items: Steering rack, control arms, AGM battery.

- After that it's upkeep-by-a-thousand-cuts of $150 or less: Shocks, ignition coils, filters, bushings, hoses, O2 sensors, etc.

I can only imaging what the number would be after adding armor, lift, RTT, etc.

Are you trying to ruin my day?
God forbid this went public and our wives found this.
We would have to take over a small country for us to take refuge in.
Oh, I forgot, all those parts were safety features......

I thought the "First Rule of 'Mud" was about MPG. There's a second rule too?

I don't look at partsouq, or mcgeorge order pages, which also lists prices. That's a bad thing. OR a cleaver way of saying I have a lightly modified 63 amg, I mean landcruiser.

I'm on the upgrade as they wear out/brake plan..god forebid if I add it all. Either way would be cheaper than a new Tacoma Pro and it's payments. So $900ish a month for those truck payments? eek

Tires were bald when I got so I got rims and tires I wanted

Sound system was blown out, no rubber left so upgrade deck and 5way amp to push some decent speakers

AHC went out so lift upgrade time

Rear brakes needed service bad so upgrade to better aftermarket setup

I think this is a classic ignorance is bliss scenario. I've been doing 180k maintenance items over the last few months and just got everything on the list completed. I made the mistake of running a quickbooks report totaling up the costs, and realized oh, that's where all my money went.

I do keep a spreadsheet on all costs including gas, although gas I don’t really care about. I bought mine recently for $5400 and spent almost exactly to the dollar ($5440) that much base lining it. It had a lot of leaks and deferred maintenance. Full timing belt kit, apps and tps, rear main seal as well as a few other seals. All fluids replaced with synthetic. Also picked up a set of barely used KO2’s on Tundra wheels for a few hundred bucks. All in all I have a fully ready to go cross country rig with all maintenance items taken care of for the next 100k Miles. Only thing I want to do is update the stereo to a modern headunit and replace all the speakers and amp etc. For $10.5k I’m very happy and hope to have many trouble free miles ahead. I hate car payments so did all this with cash. I’ll now be saving up to buy a 200 series cruiser with cash and the 100 will be retired to spare car status when that happens.

I did the same thing and as soon as I pressed total I was shocked. My stuff was all maintenance and the most expensive was fixing the windscreen leak. I bought my truck for 4800 and spent 3000 on it. Out of this 3000 I could have saved 300$ if I would have read some threads here before working on my truck. Next on list: lift kit to fix the sagging AHC, and tires.

$5,133.60 soup to nuts (excluding fuel)

Largest expenses:
Purchase - $2,000
Kill Drawers - $748
Lexus Interior - $663

I'm due for timing and front of motor service soon. I'm also due for a replacement windshield between leaks and scratches.

I got rid of a vehicle with a $700 / month payment, so if you think about it, I could dump $8,000 per year into mine and still be ahead! The bonus is, I far prefer my ‘99 to the 2011 I dumped, and it had OME suspension and F&R lockers!

I have not kept track of total spent, but I really don’t worry about that stuff.

My 1998 has 219k when I bought it for 5k. It was mostly PM'ed. Now has 225k.

New exhaust, paint, PS pump, undercoat, complete synthetic fluid flush, OEM shocks- $750.

Things needed - some more front end diagnoses as it wanders, 3rd row seats, find the bearing growl.

I thing a nother $1k and it will be back to stock condition.

Now tell me, what other SUV can you buy for $6750 that can go anywhere and bring you back for the money.

On a side note. I had $11k into my fj80

I added it up last year and almost puked. Not sure I’ll do that again.

I’m anal about maintenance, I dont cut corners, no half measures, always replace old hardware with new hardware when replacing components, replace components ahead of failure as necessary and can say I “beleive” I have a very solid reliable platform that I know will take me coast to coast through and over the mountains for many years to come.

I have about $8500 in Toyota parts from baseline work (thats at avg of 30%off) and $14500 in aftermarket upgrades. (and I could prob. spend more) Out of $23k in parts and upgrades thats nearly all hardware cost virtually no labor. Ive paid out about $1k in labor for locker set up and install. All other install, mod installs and maintenance labor, I’ve done on my own (with the helpful support of this forum).

$23k not including purchase price of my 100. The voice in my head says “dumbass” the voice in my heart says “enjoy it while you can” I follow my heart and enjoy the hell out of my 100.

It’s a pleasure to drive. I like working on it. I take it to events where I meet great friends. I appreciate that cost figures in there somewhere but consider myself lucky to own a land cruiser.

I have documented my sentiments in a separate thread too but I have spent way more money on this truck than I expected. Bought for $2500 and have spent about $8000 in repairs, PM and some upgrades. Biggest disappointment was $2000 dropped on the brake booster assembly.
Best bang for buck were KO2 tires, OME 2865 springs and Toyota shocks andof course WKOR sliders.

Funny you should post this question @Ayune.
Last year a new rider came up to me before our club ride (road bikes) and asked me about my LC.
He wanted to buy it but after telling him to make me an offer, he never did.
In the meantime I added up all the upgrades, etc. in a spreadsheet just to see how much I had into it.
(I think I got you beat in terms of cost but a lot less than @abuck99's estimate. Of course we've had it ~14 yrs. now though.)
Anyway, the :princess: didn't want to sell it so I gave him a price via text of $19.5K (lol).
He laughed and said that most upgrades are 50% of cost. (Who knew? j/k)
But since it didn't exchange hands, no harm no foul and we're still enjoying it.
Haven't seen him on a ride since . . .
Biggest cost was the stereo - 2 amps (JL Audio & Focal), 2 coaxial and 2 component speakers (Focal), h/u (Pioneer), and a sub (JL Audio).

Lol.

By the time I'm done putting everything on it that's in my office to be installed (and in Ben's shop) it's more than I'd be willing to admit to anyone but you guys.

$22,014.07 over the last 1,984 days (5.4 years) and 77,065 miles. But who's counting.

Above total includes the purchase price of $10k.

Big expenditures were tires, stereo/sound deadening, sliders and rear bumper. My timing belt service was also $1500 in parts because I was overly thorough.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Best $22k I could have spent for 5.5 years of awesome driving. I could probably sell it for $10-12k so really only $10k of that is the actual lost investment. Not too shabby if you ask me. Most people will lose that in depreciation/maintenence on a low to mid-tier full size car/compact SUV in the same time-frame. My wife spent $20k on a CX5 last year. We'll see what that's worth in another 4 years and compare notes.
