So did you ever advance your timing a bit .. some have said 3° and then continue until 'pinging' is heard.

Advanced my mom's timing quite a bit. Got some pinging. Ran high grade and there was no pinging.

The performance increase was enough that it gets fed premium now.

I think the closest description come up with so far is the bb's rattling around in the combustion chamber. I used to get some pinging with low grade gas in my 4Runner and the bb description is close...not exact, but close...the only thing off if you stick with the bb is it sounds more like maybe one single bb that pings with predictability. I dont say this to argue but to suggest that if several bb's were rattling you would expect many more pings and a much more rapid and random rat-a-tat-tat than you really get and I've never heard this...I've always heard a more consistent-with-throttle-sound and a sound you would expect if perhaps only one cylinder was pinging or if perhaps several cylinders were pinging once in a while.

What I've always heard is more the sort of rhythm and cadence you get with a slightly muted sonar echo in a nuclear class sub at say 500 meters from a continental shelf. How's that? If you haven't heard that sound, well then, go with the bb description!

You will know what pinging sounds like when you see the smoke and flames come out of the hood. The sound it made right b4 that was your pinging!
