Hey Mudders,

I'm ready to reassemble my steering knuckles after a full rebuild and want to know what type of grease I should use, and which is the best brand for this application? There are so many good brands to choose from and I'd like to narrow it down to at least one or two recommended brands.

Thanks in advance!
Mike

This question has come up several times before - check out Poser's response to several threads recommending Caterpillar 5P-0960 (Advanced3Moly) grease. It's relatively inexpensive at any Caterpillar dealer and is good stuff for the knuckles, tie rod ends, etc.

Any brand so long as it is ugly grey/black and contains molybdenum disulfide is my policy Mike..

Best grease you can get is at Caterpiller. Let me check with my parts guy and I will see what I can get for you. I would recommend a 3+ moly grease also. I can get the best grease ever made there. I will let you know tomorrow.

CAT grease part numbers
Standard - 3% moly (Part# 452-6006)
Best - 5% moly (Part# 452-6016)
You will have to go to a CAT dealership. I can't ship it. Hazardous Materials
Sorry
Dave

^^ X2 ^^

FWIW - When I rebuild my knuckles, the CAT #452-6016 is what I'm going to use....Right now, they have some dark aqua-greenish color grease in them! o_O...better than nothing being in there though...

Here's the Cat spec Extreme Application Grease - Desert | Cat® Parts Store

Thanks guys I appreciate all your recommendations, I'm going to try the CAT grease.

Yes, It has to do with temperatures generated. The higher the temp. the more protection you need. A higher % moly is always better. That being said, a 3% moly will work just fine. You can get a 3% moly at any parts store generally.

I don't believe so. A lot of folks in the 80 section swear by it and it's available at most NAPAs off the shelf. For the wheel bearings and hubs I use Valvoline Cerulean.

Dredging up an old thread here as I prepare to re-do the knuckles on my FJ62. I found a case of Caterpillar Extreme Application Grease (452-6016) for sale on eBay (10 tubes). Each tube is 390 gr (13.7 oz) - how many tubes am I likely to need to fill the knuckles properly? I'll give the local CAT dealer a call next week to see if they'll order it for me in a smaller quantity so anyone who might be able to suggest the number of tubes I'll need would be most appreciated.

Last time I did knuckles I believe I used about 1.5 small 1lb tubs per side and packed the snot out of them. Probably 700g +/- per side.

As my grandfather (never) said, “it’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.”

Also, this was on a FJ62 and I just got the most convincingly packaged EP Moly Grease from O’reillys.

Nothing has fallen off yet🤷🏽
