what to look for when buying super low mile cruiser

The problem with any sale or purchase of a vehicle, is that everyone has a different definition of the word 'Immaculate'.

Even from this side of the pond I can see that is waaaaay overpriced, $15k - $16k looks nearer the mark IMO, and it would have to be MY version of immaculate.

BTW, whilst not suggesting this is the case but, these vehicles take about 20 minutes to 'clock'.

Dave

I'm one of those

I'm 100% with Dave here. I've come across this 80's fs post and it's definitely not *my* idea of immaculate and I would not pay anywhere near the $30K asking price. In fact, I wouldn't even consider buying it because my standards are exceedingly high when it comes to buying used vehicles.

In a recent search, I managed to come across just one/1 FZJ80 worthy of commanding a $30K tag. It'd be in my garage, but my timing was off.

Good luck man!

Homeless last year and flush with cash this year. And then thinking about buying a 20+ year old truck for $22k. I must be getting old as I don't get it at all.

There is a stark difference between homeless and houseless. Making plenty of money now and enjoying life. Sorry you don't get it.

Sounds a lot like my son. Not much planning and thinking things through. Ahhh...youth.

LOL! I'm nothing like your son I'm certain of that. I plan plenty. I could retire in Costa Rica with a nice cruiser and a beach house and never work another day off of 1/3 of my 401K. I'm conservative, no bills, no credit card debt, living the life.

Not such a bad price if one wants to sleep and live in it

I'd prefer to live in it over living with a GF that wines, complains and is a biatch for 29 days of the month. For the short time that I lived in my cruiser I lived like a king and enjoyed life to the fullest. Mediocrity isn't acceptable in my life.

Don't be the sucker who paid $20k too much for a land cruiser. Besides, I am not sure your insurance would cover that for the car. It would be burning money. You might as well buy a TRD Pro 4runner.

This guy in LA has multiple LC fzj80s with lockers for prices I though were high, but to each his own. You could fly to LA and have $12K to put in the car. Plus you could take it for a drive across the country giving it a good test.

You're starting to sound a lot like a Jeep Wrangler X kind of guy.

Check for rust, remove the oil cap and dipstick and check whether white smoke coming.. if it does engine will need a rebuilt soon. check the radiator fluids and make sure there is no head gasket leak. they are the main repairs are expensive in my country.. other repairs are not that serious

This is beginning to sound like Pirate - let's lighten up and evaluate the truck, rather than psychoanalyze the buyer.

I still needed to throw $3K in parts at it to get it back to 100% and it still requires maintenance because it's 20 freakin' years old.

This is what I'd be planning for. Been contemplating an 80 for myself, and any purchase will be made considering a budget for baselining, and bringing 20yrs of PM up to scratch

I also wouldn't consider 120k miles as "super low mileage". Unless there is a complete and trusted service history available, I'd take the mileage with a grain of salt.
I've been caught out before with an 80 that presented pretty well, and had "low mileage", and used car dealer detailing over the top of 20 years of neglected PM.
I was to keen, missed the red flags, paid too much, and had a steep learning curve on that one, but I learnt a hell of a lot.
Without PM being up to scratch, the low mileage was hard mileage on my one. Lots of problems

My point exactly.
My LX450 was "Mud owned" and "Mud maintained" with a full binder of maintenance history and it was ridiculously clean inside and out with the exception of the driver's seat and steering wheel leather. I paid top dollar for a low mileage, (132K at the time of purchase) pristine, unmolested, rust free creampuff.
I don't regret it at all, and I knew what I was getting into. But it is 20 years old and things started to let go. Radiator, water pump, master cylinder, hoses, belts, rotors, brake refresh, sunroof mechanism, all 4 corners rebuilt, etc.
Then let's do a regear, and some new tires, and on and on and on.

LOL, $3K is not even close to what I have into it.
