What makes the Warn 8274 the best?

thankfully China has advanced leaps and bounds in the last decade towards quality goods.

posers run low profile winches, those that get involved in serious situations rely on the 8274 to get their asses out of what their right foot and inexperienced minds have gotten them into.

for me, noise is not an issue.
for me, reliability and speed is most important.

Mark, i was not running the 8274 down by my statement. i was making an observation only.

Did not think you were. My comment was just an observation also. or more accurately a recountig what I learned in a discussion a while back. :)

Mark...

I have had this bad boy on my first cruiser back in 88 , then on my 90 cummins ram and took it off and put it away since 98

You make me laugh with some of your comments  I am a low mount fan myself not a car park cruiser.

IMO the things that make a Warn Highmount good are the same things that make a Ford 9'' differential good.

In stock form they perform alright with their limitations, but the aftermarket support is huge, if you have the $$$ you can build them in to a reliable and solid performer.

When the time came for a new winch I went with a high performance low mount rather than a Warn Highmount due to the $$$ needed to fix a few basic flaws in the design/materials of a highmount to make it reliable when using it in harsh conditions.

RANT ON
One thing that pisses me off with Warn and some other winch companies is the lack of development and innovation in their products to justify the big $$$ they charge for the product.
RANT OFF

well, disagree. i have yet to see a low mount winch stand up to the abuse a 8274 will take.

expand on the flaws as you see them?

i have found that serious neglect is the only downfall of the 8274, that is not the winches problem but the cheap and lazy owners...

Can you expand on what you mean by abuse? Overloading, extended long winches or ?

For the type of driving myself and my mates do the minimum upgrades most have done to ensure reliability are to replace the circlip that holds the brake on with bolt/washer system and replacing the brake shaft with a upgraded giggle pin unit as the factory ones have a habit of breaking, on a recent trip a standard one was broken.

Some of the guys are also having problems with the tin plate inside the winch bending that helps hold the gears in position and pushing bushes/gears across when winching with side loads. Though I would want to investigate this issue more before defining it as a regular flaw since the winches have been apart a couple of times and I am not sure why they are moving sideways.

well, as you know i have been "abusing" the 8274 units i own for years. 12V winches running on 24V. long hard pulls, short hard pulls, long gentle pulls, pulling 2 trucks up steep hills etc with no issues.

i have seen those low profile winches dying just trying to pull a single truck on a medium grade out of the slop.

the idea of having to modify the clip and upgrade the plate seems like minor expense to ensure your ass gets out of the s*** or saves your life.

but

each to their own.

i find the 8274 fast, strong and reliable with a secure braking system that i have no issue putting my life on. i find the 12V 8274 running on 24V to be unbeatable ... period.

LOL I, have been called a lot of different names, but "POSER" SHEEEEEEEEECH , LOL:clap:

I am not gonna jump on Wanes bandwagon of planetary hating. :)

I have a warn 6000# planetary around here somewhere... yes, 6000#.... It finally split the tiny gear that feeds from the motor shaft.

But before it did, it endured years of abuse and zero maintenance. It's last tasking was to drag 6 rigs (including 2 wagons) up an slick clay bank ... about 8 foot vertical gain and an angle of about 60 degrees. I had to use a triple line rig and we were pouring water from the creek over the motor during the pulls to try to keep it cool.

The 8274 is my favorite electric winch and IMHO the best choice for a '40.

But that does not mean that there are not other good winches out there.

Mark...

Mark,
the question was:
what makes it the BEST.

there might be other GOOD winches out there.
but
why play with GOOD when you can install and rely on the BEST?

PlayDo T: poser truck deserves a poser winch? (just kiddin with yah)

Clearly, you're not married and have lots of time to enjoy your toys! :)

Nice to see someone actually servicing their toys and making sure they work when you need them.
