I left out Warn because there pretty much everyones favorite, and Ramsey is the second runner up..... so if you couldn't get eather of those what would you get?

jfonz, I would rather have a used 8274 than a new anything else. I see them for 300-500 all the time.

no offense, but you couldn't give me a Ramsey.....

I've got a Warn 8274-50 on the FJ40, and an ancient Warn Bellevue laying around too...both have been 100% reliable.

I'd rather dismantle my truck than wait on a Superwinch or a Milemarker....

I have an EW10000HD coming from T-Max right now for my 80-series...IMO, their winches seem to have good reviews, good reliability, but some cost savings over the Warn products.

I've heard good things about the T-Max too. Chicago Electric is a Ramsey with cheap arse motor, never looked into Superwinch and seen 1 too many Mile Markers catch on fire (hydraulic type)

I got my 8274 for $285 on eBay, minus the cable (which I would have replaced anyway) and with a slight leak. Gasket and seals were $15 and It's NEVER failed me.

I vote used Warn of any type over the cheapo winches. I recently found a used 8274 that needs to get mounted up. I also have an M12000 on my 80.

8274 I know is not an option but that would be the only one I would choose. A hydraulic winch would be my next choice if I had a diesel engine Or a oem PTO.

i've got a 8K mile marker... ya its slow, but it's worked everytime i've used it (10+ times)

i've never gotten middle-of-the-door-in-goo-mud-stuff-mud-hole stuck but its always worked so far....

it's now got a rop with and aluminum hawse.. i'm happy

but i would take a 8274...

funny,
I respooled my new 8274 today....thing is unbelievalbe compared to some of the ramsey winches I have used...I am very impressed, cool sound to boot.

8274...

Andy,

When you use the 12000, does it sound like it's going explode? As in real loud?

No-It sounds like any other winch-with some whiney gear noise. Why? Is yours having issues?

Alvaro and I had the planetary apart in his winch and it is easy to get it back together wrong-it drops the top sun gear and still will go back together correctly. It just makes a racket and doesn't pull at all.

I imgaine the MM choice is mostly cuz of low prices, right?
have read some negative comments here, but no specifics as to why. Anybody knows of specific problems with the MMs?

and why is TMax supposedly better than MM (considering probably same factory in China...) ?

Other... Braden, Tulsa or Peters

Old school PTO and hydraulic manufacturers. Their all built stout as hell and are FAR stronger than whateer they rate them at.

FWIW, I've only seen three Ramsey worm drive 8000 pound winches burn up with a 3000-4000 pounnd line load on them. Of course I've only been around three of them in the field... ;)

If I didn't have PTOs or Warn electrics as a choice then I'd just pick the cheapest winch I coud find. Although I have heard good things about the Ramsey commercial duty winches, and their hydraulics command a large share of the wrecker business around the country.

One of my fellow cruiserheads up here was checking out a Mega winch a while back and he was pretty impressed. Any input on those?

Thats one thing I wish I could really get the inside scoop on, so far I think alot of it is hear say but this is what I have heard. suposidly MM's electric design is a copy of ramseys, they did it when ramsey's patent expired. THe MM electic line is made in china along with the harbor freight model, though the harbor freight model is way cheep (low quality) in comparison.....now this is where I am doughtfull to any trueth but, I have heard T-max fits in the same catigory and is made in the same factory....personaly after looking at and studying eaches design I highly dought that t-max's is even that close in design, and I dought it is made in the same factory as MM's electric, maby Warns Tabor line but not MM's. If so its a totally differnt design.... and suposidly T-maxx has been around for a long time in AUS.... what the truth is I don't know.....

Oh and MEGA winch...... I remember them, seen a few, but I don't know if they still exist....havent seen anything from them, as far as advertiesing goes for years....

Hydraulic Driven off External PTO pump

I want a big hydraulic winch that is driven off a pto pump on side of transmission. Like a hydraulic crane on the side of a service truck.

Amazing at the power of a service truck crane.

That's what I have been studying on lately. Everybody talks about slow speeds of hydraulic winches. But that can be fixed by pressure.

Well, if I could find one stateside...

A Toyota Electric Winch...
However, these are extremely rare, and VERY expensive.

But apart from that..

I am not putting anything but a WARN winch on my truck.
