What kind of posi is this???? pic

OK, I'm getting some bad drivetrain sounds, so I took off the differential cover to take a look at my gears.
Well, I have some type of posi rear end. Never seen one like it.

It has a little spinning weighted system built in the carrier, another weight in the carrier to disable the posi at higher speeds, and multiple clutch packs on each side.

Anyone know what kind it is?
Will post a pic soon if anyone wants to see.

K, back at it.....
TIA,
B.

OK, here it is.

Holy Cr@p! Thats exactly what it looks like!

Since when did Toyota install Volvo diffs in their axles???? ;)

JK, could it really be a Volvo diff? and has that changeover been done before? Any info or hints on this bastage?

Thanks, B.

in a yota carrier? is that possible?

Yes please. I may end up having to rebuild this thing, so whatever info anyone can volunteer would be tremendously appreciated!

Also. What are the pluses and minuses of the Gov-lock. Special friction modifiers, oil weight recommendations, etc. I'll go ahead and search the interweb for info, but if anyone can help me out that'd be great.

Thanks bro's!

pin head is right. The gov-lock was about the only thing that worked in the 70's Very common install.
I believe only some minor machining was required since the dana 44 carrier was so close in size.
They are not pasticularly strong, GM would not warranty them with anything over 31" tires

Hence the nickname "grenade-lok"

LOL, guess its not "grenade" in a good way.

OK,
Thanks for the info guys. Appreciate it!

Yep, that looks like the Gov-Lock I had replaced in my Turbo Diesel Tahoe. Not a well thought out design. Too many components that are prone to wear and explosive failure. The shop that built both of my axles loves them. They bring in a steady business.

Brian- Looks like you're tackling the sound you mentioned. Wanted to throw a message of thanks for helping out the other day and turning me on to this site!!!

Hey Buddy!
Great to see you here!
You're very welcome for the help. It's fun to team up and work on these things isn't it. Now if you'd just come over and rebuild my rear diff we'd be even! hehehe :D I'll get that list of knuckle parts, tools, and fluids soon for your upcoming job. TTYL!

OK guys, thanks for the help.
Now I need to figure out if I'm going to keep my grenade-lock for a standard open diff.

I'm leaning toward fixing it. It would kind of suck to downgrade to open diff when I have posi, but an open diff would be cheaper and more reliable. Suggestions?

I just need new bearings in my current rear end. Maybe only pinion bearings, but perhaps carrier bearing too. Does anyone know if a standard open diff bearing set would be compatible with my gov-lock rear end. I would assume so but you know what they say a-s-s.....

TIA!

Lose that POS it is a ticking time bomb unworthy to be in a Cruiser.
Butch

I would get rid of it. The one in my Suburban exploded backing out of my drive way.

Hi All:

Just buy another 4.11 ratio Land Cruiser third member and swap it in as a replacement for your current one. You should be able to buy a good, used unit for about US$100.

Good luck!

Alan
